thanks Nat.........will take a look at them.................Nat, looked but could not find them on the sor online catalogue.............it is late and am a bit brain dead....are you refering to the grommets that keep the safety button from rattling? or the window channel rubber? ...by the way, have been meaning to ask you where did you get those really nice allen screws that hold your rear view mirrors?:cheers:

scrounging parts off of a rolled/rusted 76 courtesy of PM.........found these lower tailgate weather strips; they were solidly glued and rusted in; am showing some profiles comparing them with the ones I found on a 79 carcass....up to now no one is fabbing these and the ones on the body transplant project are totally gone except fpr some green carpet riveted in place of weather stripping:frown:on left top is original off a 79 clipped onto body with rubber tube sealing tailgate when it closes lower is off the 76 all rubber glued in place..on the right side photo the left was off the 76!!; the right side was off the 79!!...........all rubber with a flat back just like the vertical one on the 76!:confused:

Curious if we ever decided on the best option for the body-door weatherstrip? Apparently, JCWHITNEY# ZX132560W is a little snug and not as effective in keeping water out as the rounder styles (ie. SOR's). I've noticed that JCWhitney# ZX132568R is not only 1/16" smaller in both dimensions, but it also is of the round profile. Moreover, it's only $31.99 instead of $51.99 per 25ft. Unless I hear something different, I'm going to order 25ft of this stuff and see how it fits.
 
Becker, having seen and experienced both the SOR stuff and the JCWhitney; I would go with the SOR, as you can se in post #184 of this thread, the JC Whitney seal tends to "roll over" and is not as good a seal as the SOR.....snugness was not a factor for me; initialy it was a bit scary but after letting things sit over a weekend the seals took a "set" and not a problem after.......also in the event that the doors have been adjusted inwards to compensate for the weak seals rattling in the past then you can loosen the door hinge screws and adjust them outwards slightly till things settle in a bit more..........:cheers:

So, I am lazy and I have scanned some of this a couple of times...never sitting long enough to go thru it thoroughly- which I am about to do- but at the end of all you folks great labors (not to mention $) A summary of what does the best would be pretty nice.
So, that's my appeal. Meanwhile, I'll quit whinning and start digging.

Of course, that applies to the newer discoveries of some more functional materials and not the initial excellent posts.

Chris, I am doing that now, but should really restart before I get further...my note taking was sloppy :bang: and any min. now I just know the evening noise will start. :frown:

Chris; I just did mine and nearly all the seals are available xcept the rear quater window and the lower tailgate to frame; even the vent windows for the early piggies; shoot me a PM if you have a question......:cheers:

Chris, not yet, put it on the backlist...I have been working on some things while I have had good weather and as emergency's came up (like TCase). But I am betting that Lou has a good functional abbreviated list.

Maybe this weekend I'll look at it again.
 
Eric... don't have a list; just had to go through Heath's thread and track down what is current...the current numbers are on that thread and everything is still available except for the read door back glass seal that John <slocruisers> has promised to fab in the near.HTH

Ok Chris I am digging tonight cause I am avoiding more importent matters.

I do have a question for anyone: When I pulled the body side door weather stripping off of my 7/70 the rubber and the welting were seperated pieces. That is the rubber is easily removed from the outer welting material. Is that usual or is that a product of the desert heat?

I am wondering this because if it is typical then why not have it reproduced and reuse the welting? Probably good reasons but I am not thinking of them right now.

I still have a reproduction shop to go visit about 30 miles away on another topic but still have not made it there.
 
Eric, was that the seal mounted on the frame?....the later pigs 78-79 came ONLY with the welting and did not have the rubber seal that attached to the earlier ones.............maybe that is one of the reasons the later ones have more rust!...your welting probably separated from the rubber cause of the heat........

:hhmm: go look at the 75 in the morning. But yes mounted on the frame. I think I see some future in a heat gun and some glue. :) But I'd love to just go have that rubber remade because once it is mounted to the frame and the scuffs are on well...Ok, just a dream there.

Eric mine was like that.
 
Marshall, have seen a 78 and 79 original seals without any rubber component attached to the welt.......think toyota apparently relied on the door to body rubber ON the door to seal out water.....earlier ones had the rubber attached to them so there were TWO rubber sealing surfaces pressing against each other...........HTH:cheers:
