Those of you who follow along with such things probably know that the Environmental Protection Agency released its 2009 Fuel Economy Guide today. This comprehensive document lists the fuel economy numbers for every car and light truck sold in the U.S. While it’s not exactly a Stephen King-style page-turner, it does contain information that any new-vehicle buyer will find interesting and helpful.

But what we found even more interesting was a list that the EPA released in conjunction with the ’09 mpg guide. This was a list of what the EPA calls, "Fuel Economy Leaders." We’re pleased to report that Toyota vehicles occupy four of those 10 places.

The four? They’re the Prius, Camry Hybrid, Yaris and Yaris. Er, what? Yes, the feds count the Yaris as two vehicles in this tally – one with an automatic transmission, the other with a manual transmission.

Anyway, whether you think the Yaris should be counted as one vehicle or as two, we thought you might be interested in the 2009 mpg numbers the feds generated for this trio – er, quartet. So here they are:

Prius – 48/city, 45 highway
Camry Hybrid – 33/city, 34/highway
Yaris (manual) – 29/city, 36/highway
Yaris (automatic) – 29/city, 35/highway
</ul>So what we have here is a range of three different cars that strongly indicates that enviable fuel economy is possible, even if you’re looking for something larger than a subcompact car. That works for us.
