My wife and I would like to take a long weekend vacation and drive the Talimena Scenic Trail. I would really appreciate some Oklahoma Cruisers recommendations for a good cabin out in the sticks somewhere off this highway. A "good" cabin is one that is really clean and well maintained but not necessarly big. It will just be the two of us. Lots of heavy woods and good scenery is what we are after.

Also, can you recommend good areas to go wheeling? I have a pretty capable truck and have been wheeling it for many years so I am not trail shy....even pretty challanging trails. With that said, I don't want to tear off my fender flares in the process so I'd like to avoid tight squeezes with rocks and tree trunks.

I'd like to get a look at a bunch of the heavy woods and scenic overlooks in that area in both the trails and the cabin you recommend.

Your knowledgeable recommendations will be much appreciated.

That looks pretty cool, I never even knew about that.

The only thing I can lend is that there are some good off road opportunities in Clayton, which you will probably drive through to get to Talihina. Also, I bet there are some rough county roads you can explore that are offshoots of that scenic byway

I've driven the scenic road a couple of times years ago. Pretty area, but back then I tayed on pavement pretty much cause I just had a 2wd taco and a saturn SL. The one trail I've been really wanting to do down there is the k-line trail. If you go to expo portal and search k-line you will find some information on it.

K Trail runs from Ark border to Clayton, OK. It is on most topo maps. It was on my GPS as a country road. We went most of the way but got on blacktop east of Clayton. The last part I hear is pretty rough. Several guys travelled it last January and had to use chain saws to make a path to drive through.

There are several cabins for reant near Smithville, OK. I have never stayed there but they look nice. There is a lodge at Queen Wilhelmena State Park on the Tahlimena Drive. Again - I have never stayed. I usually camp in the area.

Thanks a bunch for the information. Very helpful. This looks like some of the wildest areas anywhere near Dallas so it should be a great place to wheel.

I used to live in the Hill country of Texas and there are many places to wheel down there. Dallas is rather flat and other than a farmer's field, there isn't much to do here.

Oklahoma isn't far away and you guys have some pretty hilly turf so it's time to explore your state!

Not yet. Got any good suggestions? Anything I should be concerned about?

Not that I know of. I'd never heard of it until you inquired

I have heard there are some pot growers you have to be alert for as well. They don't appreciate intruders.

I plan to stay on the jeep trails and not get out and go hiking around so hopefully we'll be OK. We'll be well armed although I'd obviously rather avoid any intanglements of that sort.

Let me know if you guys are aware of any areas where others have encountered problems and we'll avoid them.

Much appreciated.
Jack

Thanks for providing these links. I had read these and this is precisely why I put this post up in your clubhouse....to see if any Mud members had trouble.

We'll stay alert and be well prepared.

I did a trip out there in March. The K-Trail itself is not very long (maybe a day of actual k-trail) but you can mix in other roads without issue.

My two recommendations - drive it west to east and download a ouachita national forest MVUM and look to see some other trails in the area.

Also, there is a wildlife management/wilderness area that requires an 85.00/person permit. It's worth researching, the fines are hefty.

I'm pecking this out, but you can find the thread on www.centraloverland.com/forum -> completed trips -> ktrail
