I heard there's a "trick" to getting the top off a 4 runner with one person. I've taken it off once but not by myself and it's not exactly light. Is there a trick to it or do I just slide it off toward the rear really carefully? Anyone know what the heck I'm talking about?

I never took the top off mine...But, I would 2nd the get help.

If I am not mistaken, there could be issues with "re-sealing" it if you want to put it back on later in the year. Check it out if that is your plan.

I would suggest posting in the mini truck section for a better answer/help.

I've had 2 85 4r's both had the tops on and off multiple times and I never had a problem with sealing. The key is to not mess up the "gasket" that is attached to the top. If you set it down in a crappy place and leave it there for ages it will deform the gasket. I always set mine down on a tarp on soft grass and kept it covered.

Then clean both the truck edge and the bottom of the top (the gasket) very well before putting the top back on.

i actually managed to take it off myself, once i took off all the bolts i just slid it straight back and cleared the roll bar then tipped it right on the ground behind the truck. figuring out how to move the thing onto the lawn once i was holding it upright on the driveway was the hard part! i wonder if sliding it back is bad for the seal, nothing seemed wrong though.

getting the top off by yourself is the easy part but trying to put it back on the truck buy yourself is a PITA but can be done

bob you're 4runner then it gets lighter and is eaiser to do by you're self.
I used to slide it back until it almost tilts off the truck then get under it and pick it up and walk back. but help is always easier.

That's pretty much what I did..... minus the bobbing part. Tilted it back then picked it up underneath by the window jams. Putting it back on WAS a little harder though. Still beats my weakling roomates dropping it and scratching the hell out of my paint!
