my brother called me and has a problem. he has a '98 taco with the 3.4l V6 and 334k miles. he replaced the plug wires and plugs, but a buddy pulled them all while "helping" and replaced all at once and then they didn't know which wires go where. the truck ran worse than before and he called the dealership. after following their advice the truck is now backfiring and running even worse.

anyone know the firing order and which wires go where? he says there is one wire from a magneto and then the plugs connect to each other, no distributor. that sounds totally wrong to me, but I never looked at my '98 4runners plugs.
thanks!

Pretty sure the 3.4L (5VZ-FE) engine Firing order: 1-2-3-4-5-6. Distributorless ignition system for a '98 Taco. Looking at the front of the engine the left bank is 1, 3, 5 the right bank is 2, 4, 6. Good luck.

On here, or yotatech.com or somewhere there's a FSM posted online for this truck. Don't remember exactly where. Search is your friend.

cool, thanks. I think he's got it. the main problem was which cylinder connects to which cylinder. each plug is connected to one other plug. the dealership gave him the wrong combo. if he has problems this time, I'll check the yotatech site.

When I had a truck with that engine, I recall there being 3 coil packs that sit on top of each cyl on one side of the engine. The coil has a rigid plug wire/tube that comes out the bottom and goes down to the plug below it. Each coil also has a wire that goes to the opposite cylinder on the other side of the engine. I was told that the coils fire ever time that piston comes up, in compression or exhaust stroke. When that piston is in it's exhaust stroke, the one on the other side of the engine is in its compression stroke.

It sounds like he found the correct firing order though.

I'll send that FSM link to him for future reference. Marc, you are correct. the problem was that #1 goes to #4, #2 to #5 and #3 to #6, not straight across.

Running OK now?

he didn't call me back, so I assume so. I'll have to call him today to see.

he hadn't done the plugs in about 150k miles. the timing belt has been changed once with 324k in the clock. damn thing keeps running and running with only fuel and oil changes.

Just changed the plug and wires on my 92 truck with the 3.slow V6 this weekend. Firing order from passenger fron front 1,3,5. Driver from front 2,4,6. Although a different engine, I have a FSM. Toyota usually puts a little sticker on the odd side to let the user know which side the odd cylinders are. Mine sticker says 51.
