I usually hang out in the 80's Forum but my brother is having a weird issue with his 2001 Taco. I tried several searches but could not find anything. The truck is a 2wd with a 4cyl and AT.
Here is the problem:
With the head lights off and when the brakes are applied the dash lights come on. Brake lights work normally.
With the head lights on all three brake lights are illuminated.

Has anybody seen this problem? I have been digging around in the FSM wiring diagram and looks to me that the only common connection is the head light switch on the column. Any ideas or guidence would be greatly appreciated.

Thank.

the brake lights and the parking lights are tied into one another.

I will take a stab that you have a tail light converter at the rear for a 4pin towing connection(?)

Either that is defective or someone has messed with the wiring(?)

I have a thread going on this in YOTA TECH "General Electrical".

Thanks for the reply.
No towing connection. No work has been done to any electrical system on the truck. Do you think it could be the brake light switch on the brake pedal?

Hey Ron,
I read the thread on Yota Tech. I am gonna have to look for the box on my bros truck do you have a picture of it. Not sure that the taco has one. It seems like your problem didn't start until you started messing with the wiring. Is this a fair statement?

UPDATE FOUND PROBLEM:
You won't believe this but the issue was the bulb on the passenger side brake light. The plastic part in the bulb that was suppose to insulate the elements from each other melted and caused a short. The real problem was the wrong bulb was put in (my bro says he din do it, ya right ) part # 1057 and it should have been 2057. The 1057 can't take as much current.
Just wanted to let everyone know.

appreciate the update

that is most helpful to people researching years and years from now. Thanks for closing out the thread with the solution.

Glad to hear it is solved for you.
