Hi everyone,

I'm looking to move to WA with my '89 FJ62. One thing I don't want to replace are my old-school Oregon plates (standard tree plates, but they've got a good patina on them).

It looks like WA has a collector vehicle program where I can get restored plates that are period correct for the vehicle: Restored | Washington State Department of Licensing - https://dol.wa.gov/vehicles-and-boats/license-plates/get-custom-plates/special-design-plates/restored

However, it's not clear to me how this works. Do I get it through the state, or do I hunt down someone's old (valid) plates and try to register the vheicle with those?

Anyone who has been through the process, let me know! I'd love some insight.

I haven’t done this, but the vehicle requirements seem overly onerous:

  • Owned and operated as a collector vehicle.
  • Maybe driven:
    • To and from auto shows, circuses, parades, displays, special excursions, and antique car club meetings.
    • For testing purposes.
    • For the pleasure of others without compensation.

I saw those requirements...but they are pretty vague. So I guess they really aren't going to bust balls over someone enjoying their vehicle. From what I gathered, the cops don't harass you about it.

I think it would be a bigger problem if you were commuting or using it as a work vehicle.

I'd be interested to know how this process goes for you. What area of WA are you moving to?

You find your own vintage WA plates somewhere. I found some at the PDX swap meet. Lots of people have single plates, but I think you'll need two. Oregon plates aren't going to fly in WA.
