I'm in the planning stage of a summer adventure.
Background:
I live in Homer, Alaska. A few years ago I gave/loaned my 1984 FJ60 to a friend in Minnesota. We shipped it to Seattle and he flew out to drive it back to Minneapolis. Currently my kids are driving age, and we miss our 60, the friend is ready to get it back to me. I'm the track and cross country coach in Homer. We have a running camp we go to each year at Steens Mountain. This year the camp is July 21-27. I'll be bringing 15 runners and 3 of us coaches. This year also, I have work training the following week in Seattle. The 60 is in great shape, although I haven't laid eyes on it for a while, it might need a new starter is the report I'm getting. My friend had kept it running great, occasional weekend trips, regular maintenance, new tires, etc...

The plan would be to fly into PDX, and take the camp provided transportation to Burns where we spend a few hours getting everyone checked into camp. I'll have my friend drive it to Burns, he's looking forward to visiting the area for running and mtn biking. I'll take the 60 to the camp from Burns. Then after camp, drive it to Seattle for my work training, then ship it home (or if PTO works out, drive it home!). The runners and coaches will travel back home through the camp bus and back to PDX.

What could go wrong right :) !!!!

My concern right now is timing. If my friend isn't able to make the dates work exactly, are there any contacts in the Burns or Bend area that could park the 60 for a few days until I get there? I was thinking about asking the used car dealer in Burns if I could pay for a few days of storage or something.

any thoughts!! I looked for what clubs, or groups might be in the Burns or Bend area.

Only here to wish you luck on your adventure- sounds awesome! I knew a massage therapist (Ty V) who used to work at the Steens camp...one of the best!
I don't have any personal experience with the shop but you might try Fit Garage (Fit Garage - https://www.thefitgarage.com/) to see if they might be able to help with your storage needs- they're located in Bend. Good luck!

Thanks, Yeah I know Ty...crazy awesome dude...really great with the kids at camp.
Plans have changed a little, my friend is getting the 60 to Portland the day we get back there from camp. I'm driving it up to Seattle for the week while I have a job training there. I'll put it on the barge to get shipped to Anchorage from there. I wish I could drive it up the Alcan, but time off work is sparse right now.

thanks

The trip went great, it turned out my friend came to camp for a few days and dropped off the 60. I drove it up to Seattle on all backroads, made it there avoiding the interstates! I spent the night in Moro, OR, what a cool little town. The hills, and wheat fields were amazing in eastern OR. The highways and small towns and wheat reminded me of Kansas where I grew up. Got the truck shipped up to AK and have been driving it the last few weeks.
Life is good...
