Stop leak is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad...

Stop leak is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad...

Not always. There's a few really good ones out there that actually stop the leak permanently, and do NOT plug up the radiator.

X2 ya never know what it is going to stop up. Do it right instead of a bandaid.

Aluma Seal has worked well for me. (Aluminum powder type stuff). Anything with crushed walnut shells usually works well, like the GM coolant pellets.

I worked at AutoZone during college and can't even tell you how much stop-leak we sold... I tried to suggest the better stuff that is less prone to clogging things up, but people often just dump the crap in cars they are selling, so they don't care... Some stop-leak brands are only supposed to 'seal' when exposed to air, BUT, think about all the little passages in the radiator and heater cores that 'might' get clogged! I would never put any sort of stop leak in any of my cars (unless it was an emergency). Not worth the risk.

I can't comment on the radiator treatment, but I completely fixed a power steering leak in a Nissan Maxima with Stopleak. Over the course of two weeks, I'd add a little each day until I'd used about 2/3 of the 12-16oz container. My sister still drives the car and the power steering is perfect. From losing 1/4 quart per week before treatment, we have not needed to any steering fluid to the rig in over two years after adding the Stopleak.

I agree that these products are not going to fix serious issues, but they are a good first attempt at fixing a leak. If $8 worth of Stopleak had not worked on the Maxima, we easily could have spent $500+ on a steering rack.

Furthermore, if these products routinely clogged up and damaged the systems they were trying to repair, there would be lawsuits and lots of bad press.

Absolutely true.

It never fails to amaze me the amount of skepticism that exists on this and many other auto-related boards. Many people are programmed to believe that any chemical "fix" that comes in a bottle is witches brew and will only damage their cars.

Maybe this is a throwback to the days when many of the stuff sold WAS crap, but there have been many advances made in the field of additives, just like there have been advances made in every other field of human endeavor.

There are some truly amazing chemicals that do exactly what they say they're going to do. I know because I've used some of them several times and they work. They work well and don't damage the car. Of course, there's still some useless ones out there that do practically nothing. The trick is to have an open mind, listen to some of the suggestions on here and other boards, and give their recommendations a try.

can't remember..think it was lucas, but there are brands out there that don't plug up until they are exposed to oxygen. that's what you want to find.
