Check for an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifold gasket and EGR system and work your way back. There's an EGR pipe gasket under the exhaust manifold toward the firewall and a compression fitting at the other end attached to the EGR cooler. Common sources for leaks.

But, since you're de-smogged, you may not have an EGR pipe and cooler. In that case, there's probably a block off plate on the manifold where the pipe would normally be. Could be leaking there.

With the engine running, hold some hose or tubing up to your ear, run the other end along all the places mentioned. Listen for leaks.
I use a mechanics stethescope and connect tubing to one of the ear pieces and use the metal rod as support on the other end.

Another method is to use something that creates smoke, like Sea Foam poured down the carb.
This will allow you to see the general area of the leaks.
But keep in mind, the smoke will begin to disappear as the product burns away.

I second the mechanic's stethescope... those things are great.
