My steering is getting a bit sketchy, inasmuch as it's being affected by bumps and grooves in the road more than it did a few months back. Is this related to the horizontal shock I see mounted across the front steering arm? If so, is there an aftermarket fix?

dude could be a number of problems check out the search and look up death wobble. Could be as simple as your tires unbalanced or and allignment. check out https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=54590&highlight=death+wobble

Might have some answers. I just got a death wobble lately too and my ball joint pooched.

Good luck figuring it out.

Kinda sketchy eh! I like the looks other drivers give ya while you're doing the shake LMFAO.

Could be what the shops here call"bump steer" Its when your front suspension is getting a littled tired or new springs are too hard.

The horizontal bit is the steering damper.
Mine gets a wobble in the steering at about 80kph when I turn the wheel about 10 degrees.
'Gets worse towing with some weight on the rear and its lifting the front a little
ARB suggested that is a damper problem but it needs more investigation although everything is good or newish ,had a wheel alignment and new tierods a few months back and the wheels are balanced.
The damper is the only old part left.

Every company that makes a shock absorber foR a cruiser makes a damper so there must be 15-20 choices.
Im using these shocks and was going to try their damper.
My shocks are canadian so you maybe able to get their products cheaper under another name if you needed a damper.

Does anyone know basic test for a damper when its removed? I was thinking its like a shock that gets a soft spot?

As the others have mentioned, start with the rest of the steering system 1st. Make sure your tie-rods are ok. Adjust both ends of the relay rod. I forget how much the manual says to back off the plug, but steering seems too sloppy for me so I usually back off one cotter pin hole only. Check steering box play. Make sure all grease nipples are used (including the one by the box). Check u-bolts, spring bushings, etc...and when all is confirmed okay then move to the steering damper.

Ya, what Greg said. Sit someone in the truck and have them slowly turn the wheel from side to side - observe each relay rod end for movement withing the rod end - if the male mart moves within the female and the relay rod doesnt move then you need to tighten it. It is easy as long as it isnt seized. And it is an easy fix.

Regards
