My speedometer (I thought) wasnt working, while trying to look for the turn signal relay I found my speedo cable not connected behind the gauge cluster,so I temporarily got side tracked to the speedo cause I was dying to know if it was going to cost me an arm and a leg to fix it,long story short, speedo works, cable is good, but Im guessing I need to replace the gear in the T case, can anybody tell me how to remove it for replacement? ( and I found the relay,it went bad,but I guess its 40 years old, :(

It should just have one bolt on the t-case that holds a piece of metal and then the gear comes out.. Sometimes the teeth strip out.. Some of the 40's had a box that was in between two cables that had something to do with smog stuff. I don't know if yours would have it or not.

it looks like this and as stated above its held on with a retainer plate and a 12mm head bolt

I must be doing something wrong,I pulled a bolt holding a small "U" shaped piece of metal, disconnected the cable, and it' s not coming out. Wont even budge, any idea's?

Try wiggling and turning it, the speedo housing is tapered so it may be a little tight, it should jut pull straight out.

Im a bit worried about screwing up the threads that the cable attatches to, would it hurt to use a hammer and a block of wood to protect the threads?

You could tap with a rubber hammer lightly, spray some wd40 and try to twist it, like i said it should just pull right out
