I’m sorting through a few problems and just need to ask for some help.

  1. Is there an FSM that has the 1FZ-FE with an H151 or H155? I’m curious on a few things.
    1. When removing the wiring harness to pull the motor, what disconnects on the 5 speed side of the harness?
    2. I’m told that there are changes to the wiring harness for the 5 Speed, where are they? I’m getting a new harness and need to change whatever is needed.
    3. In order to pull the motor separately from the transmission, what needs to be done? I’m guessing removing the harness from whatever it’s connected to on the trans. I can get to 7 or 8 of the bolts, but the top 3 or 4 require it to be dropped a little correct?
  2. If you take off the upper heater hose, and then disconnect the lower return hose, then insert a water hose into the upper hose where it enters the motor and turn on the water, shouldn’t it come out the bottom with some force? I get water, but not at the same amount or pressure of the hose going in. It was a little sludgy at first, but it runs clear currently.
  3. Motor runs well, but oil pressure is always at L side, I don’t think it ever moves. I’m guessing that it’s the oil send switch that’s the culprit.
  4. Fuel indicator wasn’t working, I replaced it with a known good one. Still shows empty all the time, but the orange light only comes on when I’m actually close to empty. Guessing that it’s the float or something going on with the unit in the tank. Likely?

If you are leaving the transmission in the vehicle, disconnect the engine harness on the firewall, just below the intake manifold. Its a big gray square connector.

No other wiring to disconnect.

I've found it helps to put a jack under the transmission crossmember, and unbolt the crossmember. Lower it as much as possible to give you space to get to all the bellhousing bolts( the valve cover will touch the firewall). It still takes a bit of contortion and gynnastics, and long extension bar and flexible joint to get to all the bolts.

Then jack the crossmember back, and put bolts back in.

Then support the front of the transmission while you yank the engine out.

Reverse this order for reinstalling the engine

Changes between models? Or from auto to manual?

The thermostat will stay closed, so you'll have limited flow through it.
It's not a big job to pull the thermostat out. Good time to test it, and/ or replace it.

If I can get the bolts out of the top, the manual will stay. That just seems way easier. Took out motor with automatic trans and don’t want to do that again, the 2,000 pound hoist (I think 750 where I extended it to) was bent bad, and it was a lot to undertake for 1 person.

Motor will be out so I’ll install new thermostat and waterpump too.

On dropping the transmission I have limited room because of the gear shifter, without taking out the riveted in piece around it, I think it will only drop a few inches. Perhaps I drill the rivets out so that it can drop further. I don’t see how to disconnect the shifter easily, or otherwise.

Thanks

With the rubber boots out of the way, the shifter itself comes out super easy.

With a rag, just push the metal retaining ring down, and rotate it counter-clockwise 1/4 turn, and the retaining ring and the gear stick pops out.

P a think it's definitely easier to leave the transmission in. The crane I used to own, no way I'd feel comfortable balancing engine and trans off it at full reach!

Getting the input shaft lined up is the trickiest part of reinstalling the engine.

I’ll be doing this today. Took off the oil cooler cover and it’s thick sludge. Took off valve cover and it’s thick sludge. I feel like someone destroyed this truck before I bought it. Oh well, engine out today and hopefully it will clean up.

Can’t get 5 speed to come off block on top side. all big bolts are out, all top bolts. no budge on top. is anything to be undone from access slot on bottom? what else am i missing?
