Picked up a 27" snow blower for cheap (read as free:cool:) It needed help like remove what was once gas many years ago , carb cleaning and will need a spring and cable for the chute .
Its got a 10hp Tecumseh snow king motor with an electric start . When I pulled the cover off the carburetor to remove and clean I noticed it dosn't have an air cleaner . It was built this way so I was wondering any idea why they would do this ? The only thing I came up with is your using it in the winter (no dust) and an air cleaner would get loaded with moisture and then freeze making it impossible to get it to start again.
I have never seen this before but the last snow blower I worked on was 30 years old or so .
I was able to get it all cleaned out and it seems to be running like a champ so we'll have another , no snow winter this season

You are exactly correct.

did some more work on it

As Im waiting on my chute control cable I started working on getting this all set for the winter . I did notice the shear pins had broken at one time and some dillweed just shoved a couple of bolts in it (I know would have done the same if snowmaggedion was happening at that time )

This thing uses a shear pin with a larger shoulder at the head end so with just using a bolt the auger just flops around on the shaft .
One came out no problem , the other didn't want to budge so after busting off the head and the nut end of the bolt I drilled it out .
The only problem is the auger on that side didnt want to spin on the shaft , tried pumping grease in . That didnt help ,tried pipe wrenches,no good so I pulled the main shaft ,chute impeller , gearbox and augers . soaked it with Kroil and PB Blaster and Freesall
Got it down to just the stuck auger main shaft and gear box and put in the press . I was unable to get a good bite on it as my 20 ton press has a small opening and I was unable to get the gear box thru it to just push on main shaft .
After farting with it for a couple of hours heating with a propane torch (out of O2 in the big gun) and bending the auger some then cracking a weld which spit out a press block I figured it was time to go to bed as it was midnight and getting hurt wasn't part of the to-do list

The next morning before work I grabbed it and took it by my brother shop and had him take a look .
Shot over to HF and picked up a bearing tool ( figured It was going to die for the cause plus I had a 25% coupon and a free 25' tape coupon:hillbilly:) and we mounted into his bigger 40 ton press and started to bent up the bearing separator .
It was crying but not letting go so out came the torch.

A good amount of heat and got it to move and then pushed it 2 1/2" till it was flush .
Now it was time for the air hammer and pushed it out the rest of the way .

Bent the auger back into shape and had my brother re-weld the blade , cleaned up the shaft with a flap wheel and went into work .

I got home and did some "honey dos" and then off to the garage to put this thing back together .
Everything got a good cleaning ,sanding then a big helping of grease before being put back together .

The unit's all good to go once I replace the chute cable and install the new shear pins .
Im thinking about maybe adding a couple more grease fitting into the augers as the original one is on one end and grease dosnt get pushed all the way across so thats no good plus add a couple to the bushings on each end of the main shaft since theres nothing to lube it other then snow and what ever grease I was able to do when reinstalling it.

I'm really getting to dig :wrench: on small engines again and thinking about doing it as a hobby / extra $$$ for a change of pace .
