Smog pumps...

The "SMOG pump" is simply an air pump to dilute the exhaust gasses with outside air to lower overall emission concentration of various pollutants like unburned hydrocarbons, CO2, etc. It doesn't reduce total pollutants created by the car, it just waters them down so they are less concentrated in the exhaust. It is the biggest fraud on US auto consumers I can think of, other than the lousy EPA fuel efficiency estimates (nototiously inaccurate) and catalytic converters (which actually help create acid rain and lower fuel economy). If the smog pump goes out, a lot of cars will begin running poorly due to the change in exhaust gasses, which would be lower in oxygen if the pump quit pumping in outside air. The oxygen sensor in the exhaust will then decide the engine is running rich, and will lean out the air/fuel mix causing loss of power, hesitations, or "missing". The control loop is not real-time, so the car may have these issues in fits and sputs. A broken smog pump should throw a diagnostic code, causing the "CHECK ENGINE" light to come on and stay on. The code may show up as a bad oxygen sensor. If the smog pump goes out and you replace it, you may want to change the oxygen sensor at the same time as these do wear out.

ok, I'm sure some of you were thinking, "gosh steve, I don't think that car has a smog pump"....and you'd be right, my dumbass was looking at the p/s pump, but hey it was dark out. Actually the 2 year old Advanced Auto Parts water pump took a s***. They warrantied it but what a c@cksucker to replace, where was the engineering behind that line of thought.

So, what failed? The ps pump or the water pump?

water pump, it was less than two years old. I've had numerous parts fail from AAP's, even the name brand ones that are new, which is another reason to go CDan but sometimes you're in a hurry. Replacing it was a bitch, like major bitch, why would toyota make a maintenance item so tough to get to?

Is it under the timing cover, driven by the timing belt? If so I know your pain, I own a h*nda accord with the same sh*t.
It's probably makes a lot of sense with the engine out of the vehicle.

it's right next to it, you have to pull the timing belt cover to access it, actually there's a big bracket that has to come off to get to one f'ing bolt. I pulled the motor mounts and jacked the motor up to access it, what a giant pain in the butt.
