Someone at the last mtg asked about the bolt retention for the gear in the back of the sm420.

Here is a pix..

drill and tap the the sm420 washer for the #10 screw to fit into the spline of the gear, then attach the flat washer to the big washer with the #10 screw. The screw in the gear will keep it from turning, then bend the flat washer bent up with a punch. It will hold the bolt. I also red locktight and torque to 60ftlbs.

Hello, I hope this isn't a silly question (new on the site) but I'm getting ready to mate my sm420 to my 3 speed transfer case (Orion) with the Extreme Bends plate. Is this a pic of how to retain the input gear, since I won't be using the PTO gear. I was told doing something similar to this but using a roll pin. I just want to do it right the the first time. Thanks for any help.

Ahhh Rayjon could tell you better but I think the answer is yes. I had asked a question at the club meeting about making sure a gear didn't let go in my 3 speed t case and this was his recommendation. Should work in most applications like this. Like the caption above says this is the output gear. The front shaft/gear is held in place by a bolted on "cover" (not sure of the right term)that leaves only about an 1 1/2" maybe 2" of the splines of the shaft showing. Hope this helps. We also have someone in the club that has the Orion. Maybe he would know more of what your asking.

Sorry been busy, haven't been on mud much, the roll pin works but my thought was by threading the thick washer and using a bolt it wouldn't move, with the bolt in the splines.. works really well, just more work than the roll pin..
