I have never filtered a cooling system. Sounds like a change to get plugged up while in the middle of BFE. Think of those bits as an exfoliant for your cooling system.

exfoliant

I'm with Doomer on this one.......
Well I'm with him up to the fancy word part anyway, keep it simple if you plan to take the wagon on long trips to remote areas. I've literally had to use electrical tape, JB Weld and hammers to get me out of remote areas and I'd hate to add something that one of those three wouldn't fix on the trail.

I don't know, if you change out the filter in a regular fashion, like any other filter, why should it clog up. It surprised me seeing the brown crap so fast. I'd rather not change out the heater core. I like the idea of filters on things and the one on my M37 has been working for years (changed every couple years). When I removed the old clutch master, which was all new some years back, it had a layer of gunk in the bottom of the reservoir. I wouldn't mind filtering it somehow. We run filters in the power steering systems, too and I'm guessing they work, at least mine haven't screwed up yet. You diesel guys should read up on coolant filters and how important they are if you use an additive for cavitation.

So, maybe I've got some kind of personal issues with filters now that I'm thinking about it. Filters on oil, fuel, air, power steering, I even have a filter on the water line to the shower. That's it, got to put one on the coolant line because I have FDS ( Filter Deficit Syndrome ). :)

You may end up with FD, filter dysfunction

Changed a lot of coolant filters on L10/M11 Cummins engines during the “C Service” which was every 100,000 miles (roughly once a year). They had a cheesy plastic valve on the inlet that sometimes worked, sometimes didn’t.
Where I’m at now, I think we have one piece of equipment that uses a coolant filter. Wix brand.

I use Wix or Ballwin both seem the same. I just clamp off the lines before changing. I thought it might be a good idea to add one to the 55. 🤷‍♂️

...says the guy whose Pig epitomizes the "Some is good, more is better, too much is just about right" philosophy I reserve for what's on my dinner plate or in my drinking glass and the volume of my music.

I’m just wondering as to where it would go and where you’d plumb it in.(?) Also wondering if it’d be to your benefit to do a couple of coolant flushes over the next couple of months to see if you can get the “brown” stuff (probably LM7 iron?) cleared up a little. No tap water or well water in the coolant system, 50/50 antifreeze or antifreeze with distilled water only, yahh?

Yeah, you don't want to use our well water, it's hard. As far location goes it seems anywhere is fair. I would think you don't want it to be the highest place in the system for burping reasons. Inside the frame rail and down line from the heater might work and easy to change. My thought was to change out a couple filters quickly before the next long trip. Flushing would surely help.

As far as mini bars go, this is a serious camping rig we don't leave without a fully stocked beverage cooler. :)

I want to say yes, but let me check the records.

Both are 2" smoothies with 8" travel on the rear. I'll check the front and get back, can't find the paper work on the fronts.

Yep. all are 8" travel.

Let's talk about engine coolant filters. I've had them on my military trucks, one being a diesel and the other gas. Now that I took out my rear heater and rerouted the heater lines, thought I'd mount a coolant filter somewhere. I noticed brown crap around some of the fittings and figured it wouldn't hurt mounting one in line. Any thoughts good or bad on this?

Brown crap? When was the last time you changed coolant?

When I built it. It was a used motor with @64,000 on it when I got it. I just took the rear heater out of the system and rerouted all the coolant lines, even those had a brown film inside the hoses. I've got the filter and all lines installed, on to the next project.

I think I would go for more regular changes of the coolant, brake fluid and PS fluid.

I know I am guilty of not changing these fluids out as often as they "should" be...

I like this idea of a couple of coolant flushes.

What is LM7 iron?
