Recently, my 60 has been starting harder than usual - even in 75 degree plus weather.

Also, about the same time that these starting issues surfaced, there has also been some strange bucking/stuttering. Although it is totally intermittent...it almost feels like a bad clutch, but I know that it isn't.

I've heard that this issue may be related to the smog sys.?

thanks,
jake

The smog trick is EGR bypass. Search for it, there is a good how to. I forget where it is tho.

mine does this too, any help would be hott!

Hey Guys,

Does the bucking seem to happen more so if engine shut down, restart 30 or so minutes later ?

Does the bucking seem to temper out , stop after , oh, 5 to 10 miles of driving ?

If yes, check the carb cooling fan. If it's not running, carb boils dry and gets so hot, that fresh gas flashes to vapor bowl as fills. Engine gets liquid gas to jets and rich gas vapor from bowl vents. Symptoms are from the rapid cycling from flooding to running out of gas to flooding to ....
After awhile, carb cools down & everything is better....

Now, if the symptoms are more or less all the time, then look for crap in the carb..(water drop or two) ..the two 'bolts' on the bowl of carb will drain bowl (there actually to get access to the metering jets).

EGR valve problems 'typically' show up as a 'won't idle' problem....with foot taken off accel , engine slowly dies over a few seconds .
( a quicker die with a kick or two could be the idle solenoid valve)

My EGR was bad and it was exhibiting the same symptoms (but so do a lot of things). It would idle fine but get her on the road and she was a piece. After spending 150 bucks at Toyota for carb work that showed no improvement I went home and stuck a screw in every hose that ran to and from the EGR diaphragm and she ran like a top.

....... maybe if the EGR is stuck the open position. But I think idling OK and bucking under acceleration is a more common symptom of something amiss with the EGR system.

...... This is closer to my experience. All I have to do though is plug the hose that runs from port Q of the vacuum modulator and my rig's bucking goes away. I need my EGR system functional soon cause I need to pass smog:mad:.

Good luck with yours:cheers:

Butt, I have done exactly what you've done and I was able to pass smog in Boise, ID. I just plugged the hose back in for the test and it passed with no problems. Apparently the bucking and stuttering doesn't necessarily mean the EGR isn't working. A half mile away from the testing station I plugged the hose back up until next year.

Thanks Ray!
I just got similar advice from FJ40Jim. My rig's going in tomorrow for test. We'll see what happens. Wish me luck!

Mine passed smog today!:bounce:

Funny. The smog guy was test driving another vehicle when I showed up. When he came back he didn't see me and asked his front desk guy "What's my next vehicle to smog test. Please tell me it's not that Land Cruiser!"

The desk guy said "It's the Land Cruiser"

The tester says "Damnit! Those things NEVER pass"

30 minutes later he said "You're making me eat my words. That's the second Land Cruiser I've EVER had pass on first try!

Woohoo!:bounce2:
