Hi, this morning I noticed two noises coming from the car that I had never heard before - a slight ticking tapping sound when I accelerated my hj61 and also a sound not dissimilar to a slightly worn bearing. The sounds only appear when the engine is under load, even the slightest load whilst driving along, meaning when I press the clutch or lift the accelerator the sound stops. As the frequency of the sound appeared to stay the same whilst driving at different speeds I slowed down to 60kph and whether I was in 3rd, 4th or 5th the frequency of the sound was consistently the same making no noticeable difference what gear I was in what speed I was driving. Where I live it has been a bit warm of late and I had driven the car a little further than I would normally drive it but nothing excessive. The oil level is fine and I change it regularly. The engine has 430,000 km and the gearbox was completely rebuilt with a new clutch 4 years ago. Obviously I will take the car to a garage to get checked but I would appreciate any thoughts you may have.
Thanks John
Update - after a little more testing discovered that the noise is related to the transmission. Whilst driving at 30kph the frequency of the knocking sound is increased by each higher gear and it is not present in reverse.
