I just bought a 2000 Taco to use as a DD and get a little relief from my not so fuel efficient 76 FJ40. I need to replace the shocks and the HD Bilstiens seem to be the product of choice for most. The question I have is do I need a spring compressor to do the front shocks, since the shocks are inside the springs? Also are there any other special tools and equipment needed to do this job? Shocks are pretty simple but I have never done them on a Taco.

Thanks

yes you need a spring compressor.
those are available for loan from most autoparts stores.
they can be EXTREMELY dangerous - if you haven't ever used them or can't work with someone who has, it may be worth the extra $$ to have a shop do the shock exchange. If you go that route - take off your shocks & springs and take them to them to do, that should save you some labor charges.
Good luck and be careful.
