I'm considering replaceing all 4 shocks. Just wanted to know if i should go with the same toyota shock absorbers or are there better shocks out there that would give me a better on-road ride ?.

I think you'll get as many different opinions as there are different brands of shocks. I, personally, would go with Toyota OEM shocks, if you're not planning on lifting or doing heavy off road. If Toyota installs them, they have a lifetime warranty.

Hank is right in regard to the choices. There are MUCH better shocks available but it depends on what you really want to do. I feel OME to be a good shock. I have heard great things about Billsteins(sp?)

Would any harm be done by installing a shock designed for a lift, such as OME 133's on front and 101's on back, without springs and t-bars? I am considering this, thinking I may add the springs and t-bars later, if I don't end up selling.

If you are thinking about lifting it they yes it might be a good option. For me I hate my OME shock. They are way too soft for me and my OME shock looks really old after only one winter. The spring are great though.

Too bad we could not get the Koni for 100 series in US

Yeah- I don't know what the deal is, because a couple of posts in the 80 and 100 forums said they would be available in late 2004, but no one is carrying them that I know of.

I've looked into the Bilsteins, but didn't find an application for a 2" lift. I don't know if their OEM replacement sizes would work.

Hmm.. I actually love my OM-Emu shocks in combo with the (Emu) T-bars and heavy rear springs...Sure, they are a tad soft, but I feel its a great (compromise?) between street and off-road ride, besides..they are quite a bit stiffer (than stock) when you really hammer them on the rough stuff.

The only thing I question, is the life-span of the Emu shocks..I am sure they will not last as long as the O.E. Toyota shocks !!

As mentioned earlier by others, make your decision based on the TYPE of driving (use) your 100 will get.

For good on-road ride I would consider KYBs. They are available for stock 100s. When I replaced my Camry's shocks with KYBs all around it really improved the handling.

Bilstein HD Shocks
#s BE5-2739/BE5-2740 (~$75)
KYB GR-2 Shocks #s 345022/345023 (~$65)
Edelbrock Performer IAS Shocks #s 33602/34602 (~$100)
Old Man Emu N133 and N101 Shocks (~$80)
Ralph HD Shocks (53mm) #s TDR1103/TDR1114 ($? in AU)
Tough Dog Foamcell Shocks #s FC41103/FC41114 ($? in AU)

What is the consensus here for how long the stock shocks are good for? Do shocks wear slowly over time or are they pretty much 100% until failure.

Stockers work good

The stock shocks are tuned for a smooth freeway ride and are great for on road use- I swapped mine out recently and am very pleased with the ride quality. Unless you want to firm it up, I'd go stock- theyre cheap as well

I replaced the stock(and still working) shock with OME before I had a lift, very happy with them as I am with the other 8+ sets of OME shocks I have on the other cruisers. Pretty much one of he 1st things I do when I get a new Cruiser is replace the shocks with OME even before its lifted........then I lift most of them........mentaly it feels like the lift cost less :)

If you want a FIRMER, more controlled ride go with the Bilstein HD stock replacement shocks. These are for the stock suspension, they list them for 98-01 and I'm not sure if they would be the same for later years.

Front: BE5-2739
Rear: BE5-2740

If you enjoy the soft stock ride, then go with Toyota.

You really can't ask for "better" without specifying what would be "better" in your opinion.

I have an LX 470, can I just replace the shocks with aftermarket ones? Any links to online sites that sell replacement shocks?

I don't know? Unless someone can chime in with some 411 then contact Slee at www.sleeoffroad.com and discuss your options with him. He is the LX 470 suspension expert.
