Hey all!
Its been a long time- Jason, I see you moved to KC ? :D
Too long its been obviously-
Well on to my big question-
I have an 86-95 toy box that I had to replace the top section on where the steering shaft connects to and wouldnt you know it I didnt set all the bearings back in correctly when I went to put it together so after a few days of driving...my steering locked up ;)...
Long story short I have 2 toy boxes now

, and have to swap both the piston

and the corkscrew shaft

due to the bearing channels/slot being chewed up (yea its bad). If there is anyone in the immediate Wichita area that would be willing to help with this swap, as I am having a hard time figuring out how to do it, it would be greatly appreciated.
You can reply to this post- email me direct enzogfx@gmail.com - or just call me on my cell 316-650-0297 ...

Hey Mike, sorry to hear about the troubles with the toy box. Hopefully Kris, Bruce or Don can help you out. Of course if you come up to KC, you know where you can stay now that we're up here. Do you still have the motorcycle to get around, or dd?

Still have the moto - thankfully too :)
Had to ride in the rain a few days but nothing too bad-
Hoping to get this thing put back together as I just bought a house on the west side so the truck bed will be needed...
:grinpimp:

I'm a little thick and do not follow you. Do you have two boxes and both need repair or the parts from the second box will be used to repair the first? Give me a call and we'll see what we can do. I recently ported my spare 80 box so I've been where you are.

Yes, I have 2 steering boxes that I will need to swap both the piston and wormshaft out of one to the other. The 86-95 toy steering boxes have 44 little ball bearings that roll up and down the wormshaft inside the piston, causing it to move up and down. (*the above pictured piston is from and older toy box i believe). In my case I did not replace the bearings correctly and some seized up in the channel and chewed up the slots in both the piston and the worm shaft.

If you have an extra set of guts why not change tho whole box? When you disassemble the spare do not remove the work gear, pull the piston and worm out as a unit. This worked on my box w/o issue because like a dumbass I decided to disassemble the unit so I know your pain.

I'll be tearing apart my front axle this Saturday if you can get the parts to my place we can get them swapped.

Well one of my boxes is tapped and ported for hydro assist and the other is a spare original - I cant figure out how to get the worm shaft out of the housing to get it as shown in the picture.

I would leave the worm gear shaft attached to the housing mount and the piston if possible.

I think it would be easier to drill and tap your spare and reassemble it than to get too deep in the problem box.

In my case the reason I have the spare toy box is because its the housing mount that was cracked and leaking on my tapped box that caused me to go get another spare. So I need to take the wormshaft from my damaged housing out and put it back into the good housing, then pull the piston from my spares body and put it back in my ported body. Its a big mess.. I just can't figure out how to get the damn worm shaft from the body

Sent ya an email with scanned FSM steering gear section from an '88 runner. Should be what you need to get 'er apart.

Big Thanks to Kris for his help and info provided - After a long afternoon I was finally able to get both boxes apart and put back together. Truck is now back on the road!
