Looking at replacing the front belts on my *new* BJ74. I rang Southside Toyota in Woolloongabba [the Gabba - quite a large depot] but genuine belts for my truck are discontinued. A few questions:

a] I searched toyodiy.com, found the parts #'s, re-searched toyodiy.com for all makes with the compatible part #'s and came up with a bunch of models only of the same era and/or not offered in Aus. So I emailed Southside Toyota back requesting the belts by part # this time. Is there anything more I can do on this front?

b] I also checked HZJ79-era belts [as Southside Toyota have them in stock - ie. not discontinued] but the part # is different. What are the odds that they'll fit up?

c] Is there any other avenues I can explore to get nice *shiny* new belts?

I got some restored in Perth for my ZB Fairlane about 12 months ago and I'm errr.. not in the same financial position I ahhh.. was.

The Fairlane's for sale BTW.

Nice looking Fairlane,I used to have a ZC.
In many cases Toyota parts have different numbers but the parts are interchangeable.
I suspect Toyota are not being helpful because its a grey import.
I would look at some 75 or 79 series belts,or I could measure mine. Im sure they will fit.

Thanks very much Rosco, I may take you up on that offer. Unfortunately I think Toyota helpfulness [or lack thereof] is part of their training.

'Oh, so you're curt and have an air of entitlement about you? Great! You'll be working in Spare Parts.'

I'll see if I can track down a 79 series locally and physically compare. Interestingly enough they've discontinued 75 series belts, also they reckon 75 series only came in brown. That was a surprise.

Thanks for the compliment, a lot of time has gone into it. Hopefully the potential buyer will see eye to eye. You had a ZC? I like the ZC's, they're wider, they run a Clevo etc. and I like all the little extra trims like the ones on the sunken rear windscreen. But when I bought this I didn't like the stacked headlights, though now I do. Ever seen a yank '66/'67 Fairlane coupe? Swish I tells ya. Real swish.

The service at Toyota can vary from someone who is a bigger fanatic on landcruisers than you,to a sloth who gets pissed off each time he has to get of his arse and waddle his way to the front counter.
Swapping dealers can make a huge difference

The 79 series maybe a direct replacement for the 75 because the HZJ78 is really a 75 series with coil springs ,so theoretically it should have the same belts.
The 75 series did come in the grey/blue interior, not sure if we got any here, except in the mwb
.

Long time since Ive had a fairlane, must have been about 1980.Mine was the 302 cleveland. My firends dad was the president of the local WA Fairlane club, they had some nice fairlanes in their family.
I could have bought my friends ZD 351(windsor I think) for $1200 a few years back with only 140000 miles on it,no rust with all the original chrome but I didnt have room for it with 3 cars already.

Got belts sorted, aftermarket were $110 each, genuine $330+. Plus genuine wouldn't fit because of the location - 75/79 are different. Also, the retracting mechanism depends on the angle of installation, so a belt that mounts vertically [90 degree] mounting differs from a belt that's mounted on an angled pillar. Due to the nature of the 74 it mounts aft of the upper swivel.

To be honest this was part of the roadworthy and I've only just got it registered - fxxxing dealer sat safely 1000km away whilst I chased up the finalities so I could actually register it in my name. ****.

Nonetheless it's sorted and I'll probably report him to the RTA. He's quite unethical. If anyone needs any seatbelt help 7x series or otherwise I've become quite an expert in the last week!

Good info Who supplied the belts in the end?
Did they lic it as a 2 seater or 5 seater? Owners in WA use to pull the rear seat out and lic the JDM73/74 series as a 2 seater rather than go to the trouble of fitting rear belts.

Belts were from Klippan through a Brisbane dealer - very helpful actually.

I did what your WA guys did and registered it as a 2 seater, but I got away with leaving the back seat in. I got no place to store it.

Going in for EFS 2" over stock, shocks and tie rods on Friday too. Should be a different truck now.

If you need belts restored in WA Seatbelt Solutions are fantastic. Did the belts on the Fairlane - amazing.

Can they get the retractor thingys working?

Good question - the belts on the Fairlane were lap-sash non-retractables, naturally. I guess you could ask, or go for new ones direct from a Klippan dealer. Is this for the troopy?

I'd spring for the new ones. Jeez they're nice. They go on so easily and when you unclip em.. ZOOM.. they pull themselves up quicker'n you can!
