A tube of 3M seam sealer at the auto body supply is about $13. A tube of paintable latex with silicon caulk at HD is about $3 ( the 35 yr stuff). Is there that much difference in the two products?

3M is the only way to go.

Yes, there is that big of a difference.

YES.... go with the 3M.

paintable sealer has chemistry to be paintable.....
simple caulking will not have that chemistry.

Ok, so 3M is the way to go for seam sealer, but now another question about seam sealer, how do you remove it. I need to shorten a 79 series bed and would like to do it up front where the head of the bed mates to the bed (See Photo) as opposed to cutting a 1' section out of the side and having to weld everything back together. But, how strong is the seam sealer once the spot welds are drilled out?
