So, I'm looking for my fifth 4runner and am eyeballing the 2003's currently. I know about the SR5 / Sport / Limited models. Definitely need 4x4. Tell me about real world differences with the V6 and V8. My current 4runner is a 98', so anything will be a great improvement.

Thanks!

4.7 litre has a belt as well. It is an interference engine. The 4.0 Litre I think runs a chain.
V6 got a 5speed auto behind it in 05.
The V8 has full time 4X4 I think.
Not sure I would get a "Sport" version with the XREAS suspension as this is to make it better on the asphalt and add a maintenace cost if any of the shocks etc should fail.
I think the 4.7 would get worse highway mileage than the 3.4 you have now.
I think 17 inch rubber which may add more money to replace them than 16 inch.
I think 05 + or so, better check, got the tire pressure sensors so this is an added hassle to look after. Might save your life too if you don't check tires though.
I think your 3.4 is a lower maintenance powertrain than either the 4.0 or 4.7 but...

If you plan to tow anything the V8 is a must. I don't think there is much mpg difference. I have the 4.7 in our Sequoia and it has been a great engine so far. The XREAS system can be removed and it seems many on toyota120 do this as they upgrade the supension. We looked at these but the 3rd row seats were a big deal and they aren't very good in the 4runner.

I have a 98 & 04 runner. 04 is limited v-8 full time 4wd. LOVE it.better power better mileage than the 3.4 98 runner. especially now since running 285/75s on the 98. 04 rides better, quieter, overall a great rig. just got back from a 3900 mile road trip in the 04. averaged 19.7 mpg according to the computer. i know thats not the best to go by but hey anywhere near 19 with a v8,full time 4wd suv. whats not to like

My Dad has an 04 with the V6 and keeps it at his place in Wyoming. I bought his 01 LTD from him a few years back. Styling wise...I much prefer the 02 vs the 04, however; I have traveled quite a few miles around Wyoming in my Dad's rig and I must admit, it rides better and has more power. I also feel my 02 has better ergonomics inside and visibility. I have NO desire to trade mine in even for the new style. I really want a 200 series Landcruiser $$$

03 V-6 runner in my garage, really like it.
Average around 21.5 around town with plenty of power.
I have a buddy with the 4.7, nice motor, tons of power but hes getting around 16 MPG.
As stated above, if you plan on towing anything, id get the 8.
