Wow.. this one was good.
I get plenty of pretty obvious spoof phishing emails from "ebay", but this one originated from a legit eBay auction for a really nice looking nordic blue 1982 Landcruiser. I sent a message to the seller via ebay message system. Then, mysteriously, the auction delisted. I then get an email from his yahoo email to my email telling me the car is still for sale with eBay Purchase Protection. All money will be held by eBay until I take delivery of vehicle and I am satisfied with the transaction. I need preapproval from ebay.
I get this email today, supposedly from ebay:
Anyways, I forwarded it to spoof@ebay.com, eventhough I already knew it was fake. It originated from e-bay@e-bayinvoice.org and requests $4,000 deposit payment by MoneyGram to a "Kevin White" in Los Angeles, CA 90064 (an eBay representative.. yeah right!)
Just to be sure, I called ebay to let them know that this guy is using his legitimate ebay account to initiate a phishing scam. They are aware, and they were the ones who pulled his auction off for suspicious activity. But, what was a little reassuring to me initially was that I exchanged a few emails with this dirtbag about his FJ40, and he knows enough about FJ40s to at least pass muster.. initially.
Buyer's Beware!!
