Anyone ever sandblast shake siding?

I've got cedar shake siding on my house that was painted 7-8 years ago . About 2 years ago, the prior owner powerwashed the siding and got too close, splitting some shakes and ruining an already poor paint job.

Scraping and sanding cedar shake doesn't appeal to me, especially since paint isn't going to last. I'm thinking of getting a cheap sandblaster and trying to sandblast back to bare wood so I can stain it. I've got to patch some areas anyway, so if I damage a few by blasting it's no big deal.

Anyone done this? Any reason not to try it?

On a related topic- any of the cheap (HF, Costco, etc) guns worth using? I know you get what you pay for, but I don't want to spend much for this experiment. I'm thinking $50 or less, maybe $75 if there's a significant jump in performance over the $50 guns.

I remember that someone once used ground up pecan hulls to do blasting on wood. It was a company around here I think.

But, you do not want to tackle a job that big with a small sandblaster/compressor.

see if there's a dry ice blaster near you or a soda blaster

How about using paint stripper. chemical paint stripper.

Too time intensive. The paint is peeling pretty good already, so it shouldn't take much to knock it off. The big problem is all the cracks and crevices due the overlapping shakes. If it were wood lap siding it would probably work great.

I want to blast it not because I need the abrasive properties, but rather because the very uneven surface isn't suited for scraping or stripping.

My neighbor had his mother's house sandblasted about 10 years ago. It was fir lap siding that had been painted, and he wanted to stain it. I know it can be done, I just don't know how the cedar shake would handle it.
