Good news! Its running! I checked the plug gap and adjusted a few, adjusted the valves again, cleaned terminals in the dizzy cap, bumped the timing back a hair and it fired right up. I adjusted everything and its running really good. I took a video but forgot to hit the record button.... but Ill get another video here soon. The valves sound sooooo much quieter than on the old head. running 19lbs of mercury at base 7 degrees timing!

I have not posted a lot of photography lately. Ill post some to the what did you do thread soon too. I got a new digital monochrom leica q2 camera over the holidays that I have been trying to get accustom to. The output of the black and whites are on par with a large format field camera it really blows my mind on what It can do. @Grayscale you should get one of these cameras haha.

the photo below is the fleet!

a little sneak peak of what I have in store for 2025! I just struck a deal on this old school belleview warn 8000 winch. Planning on doing a resto on it. New bearings and gaskets, motor, a clean up, new cable, brake and fairlead, and figuring out how to mount this bad boy up and run it on the ol salt wagon. any suggestions would help on mounting! I have not gotten it in the mail yet.

also any suggestions on cable let me know!

Been wondering about these as there was one for sale near me for pretty cheap. Everyone wants the 8274 - which go for $$$ - but from what I understand this was the predecessor. Are there significant differences?

I think mounting is different, does not power out, the controls are different, and it has a different style brake. warn rated it for 8000 lbs but it looks just as stout as the 8274. I think its the winch that got warn into the winch business. with shipping I am in it for 300$ so far. I think once I get it all finished Ill be less than half way into a 8274 in price maybe less witch is pretty good I think. probibly around 600ish more to get it going good and mounting. maybe more. still way cheeper.

Maybe the information in this thread will help you get it mounted.

This place makes a replacement motor that powers in and out.

I’d call WMS and see what motors they have available.

I used one of their motors to replace the old Prestolite motor on my 8274.

Here’s the post:

well I got this winch pretty much busted apart. cleaned 50 years of dirt and grime off too. the motor is pretty nasty but maybe salvigable. but I might as well buy a new one if I am going to put time into this thing. The gears all look great! I will need a new break the one that was on it is super bent. I painted the spool as it was starting to get crusty.

I rust converted the spool and zink coated the bolts. might find replacements. I had a broken bolt where the break lever attaches. I started to drill it out but I am going to need to buy a ez out and a tap.

this little guy just being annoying! like the water pump bolt when I got the block.

I guess now I gotta start getting a parts list together. so far I know I need a motor, break, winch mount, cable and gaskets if I can find them. the bearings seem pretty good actually. but I imight replace them.

some updates: today I got the case all put back together and actually ran it with the old motor... although it died very quickly. so I am going to get a new motor. Not sure whaat yet. I may just get the cheeper winch motor that winches in only.

Got that little bastard out.

Going to need another one of these for the brake. I emailed herm the over drive guy. We will see if he can help.

I ordered a new brake lever from Belleview Winch Brake Lever - https://brennans-garage.com/products/belleview-winch-brake-lever and I reached out for him with a few questions. He can put a disc brake that is cable driven. I was more wondering about his mounting kit.
They have a winch in and out motor too but again 325$ and honestly I don't think I will do more than get someone or myself unstuck on the beach. I can always upgrade in the future. still mulling it over.

I think the direction I am going for mounting is to use the winch bumper that the fj40 came with. its meant for a 8274 but I think I can cut the winch mounting plate off, fab up a new one and weld it on. I ordered some 1/4 inch plate steel to make somthing. (same as the bumper)

Plan is to mount the winch and then figure out cabling ever thing to operate the winch. and the wiring switch as I no longer have the oem warn one.

@Unimogguy Can you do the set albright setup like you mentioned for a the belleview using the three prong winch in and out motor?

Update: decided to go with the cheeper winch in only motor. it should be here next week sometime. I ended up finding a new one for 159$ on ebay. If I find I need to upgrade the motor, I will upgrade the whole winch with a 8274. The decision came down to me not really doing any hard core off roading. mostly beach driving and occasional getting somebody unstuck. Like i said though if I find it needs upgrading Ill find a 8274.

going to the classifieds for some winch parts. Might be somebody that has parts.

There is someone currently selling some parts for a Bellville in the classified section.

I saw that. I only saw some gears and a winch case. Ill see if they have anymore parts

If you have settled on a mount plate, I'd contact this member and see if he can cut you a little longer plate to fit the Belleview winch.

The benefit I see in this type of mount is it is strictly bolt in if you don't weld and buy one of his welded kits.
Bolt in is nice! I think I am going to attempt to make my own. I keep going back and forth on witch bumper to use though. I thought about cutting the winch mounting plate off of my 8274 winch bumper. (its the one you see for sale in a couple of places looks like a mana free one) or welding up somthing like what @Kayaker has on my oem bumper. I have some 1/4 plate steel coming. I have the tools to make it. Even got a cool plasma cutter for Christmas.
