I’d agree that’s where (at least 1 spot anyway) your coolant and combustion are joining. You can see the metal ring has combustion residue, which it’s going there. Anything suspicious on the head or block in that same spot?
Yeah thats what I was seeing too. Nothing suspicious on the block that I could see. I think another spot like the one I posted looked slightly suspect but was more vague than the one above. but makes sense why no water and oil were mixing. at least noticeable mixing.

What does the straight-edge and feeler gauge suggest, is this gasket-area concave on the head or block?
I have not checked yet but I will. I just got everything apart. I had quite a few other house projects this weekend. The head was fine when I put everything together last year around this time. but it could very well be out of spec now.

Are they Toyota valves? .313 or ,314-inches in diameter?

Do the valve guides protrude .650 to .690-inch from the cylinder head?
They are Toyota valves. have the teq logo on them. I have not checked but its good to have the specs thank you. I am not too worried about this head because I am using the one I found as its already been rebuilt. I will check the block though. It also was within spec prior to stabbing it in the fj40. (will double check everything before I install it though. I will be taking this one to be checked and machined as needed then either selling it or keeping it as a spare.

No updates, I am waiting till after the holidays to finish it all up. I have 2 questions I never put the carb insulator heat sheild back. because it was broken when I got it, I cut it off and used the base to mount the carb. Should I buy one from city racer and use it? was rocking without it and saw no issues. What does it actually do?

any mods (other than valve mods) I should do while I have it apart?

Picked up the head today! The guy I got it from was really cool. he is a body shop guy. He had lots of cool old fords including a few unibody trucks he was working on.

Now that I have the head I can tell you guys I payed 200$ for this one. it has been machined flat and new valve guides and valve seats. missing number 6 intake valve. Story is an older guy brought the head in for machining and passed away before he could pick it up.

I bought a new intake valve, valve seals, and air injection plugs for this head. I am exited to get the fj40 all back together when i get home from the holidays!

I've never run with one, but I suspect it would give your ride better hot weather driving manners.

I'm a big fan of rocking stock heating/cooling tin, but understand reality and budget constraints.

Double check for a galley plug around #4 spark plug.

Weak spot in head. A plug installed by machine shop is great insurance.

that is a good thought. I need to look at that!

yeah I was thinking about getting one from city racer while I have everything off. I should have bought one last week but I never got around to doing it.

well I got the head on yesterday with the new oem head gasket. I am having trouble getting it to start though. I am not sure what the issue is. I got it to puff one time and then nothing just crank crank crank..... I am thinking it some sort of spark issue. It sat for a month without running so maybe its just the Cap. I am going to clean up the points in the cap to be sure. can the pertronix unit go bad? I still need to confirm I am not getting spark though.

The oem head gasket part number if anyone is curious.

Please ignore the clear tube I am using for vacuum line for the 4x4 system. I ordered some but this is just temporary.

Valve lash to tight, maybe?

I am hopping its not a compression issue. It should fire. Maybe a timing issue? I am kinda at a loss right now. I am going to take a break for an hour or so this morning.
