I've seen some scary s*** with homebrew hydro assist. Matching the ram to the pump is critical. Particularly if you drive your rig to the trail.

Chicago,
No need to unbolt box, leave attached to frame.
Pull pitman.
Unbolt 4 cover bolts, use some liquid wrench on them just as a precaution.
The cover and shaft will come up together, all the way out.
If the shaft seals look bad or it had weepage on the shaft you could replace those.
This is not difficult and requires no other disassembly of box.
THe worst part is catching the fluid when you drain it, and use care when replacing.

Assist is nice. I added it on my 40 and like it. No more squeal, ever. Used psc 1400 series pump and 3/8 lines but the ram I got had some smaller holes at the inlets
Which slows the overall system a tad, I am used to it and it is quite nice on the freeway.

Don't turn wheel during process or while disassembled.

what have you seen?

what have you seen?
One guy had a huge ram, he would turn the steering wheel and a half second or so later the wheels would actually turn. We wound up disconnecting his ram half way to Loon Lake so he didn't wind up in the ditch. The rig did very well on the trail.

What are you talking about a guys huge ram for?!?!

so would a 1" or 1.25" be even quicker? I want somthing to match my Saginaw J20 big Bore Box..

Is there a Chart or anyone with some experience with matching boxes/Pumps and Rams? I know PSC has it figured out, but i dont really want to toss $1000 at it when its working alright right now.

1.5 inch ram works perfect for a saginaw box. I have a 3 turn box with a lengthened pitman arm and the ram keeps up. The only thing you need to buy is the ram and get the hoses made up... hydro assist is cheap.

Update...
I ended up just getting a new box under warranty.

Whole story around that, but that's the jist.
