so I am going to be treating the rust on my 87. Would wire brushes attached to a drill be enough to take the panels down to clean metal? of will I need something more substantial. I am new to all of this and would love a bit of info as to what basic tools i might need. Most of the rust is simply surface rust, but the driver side 1/4 panel has a b it of rust that has eaten through (about silver dollar sized).

Nothing? Im REALLLLY new to the world of auto repair, I own zero tools and am lookimg for a guide in the right direction on some basics that I might beed.

sand paper of various grits I am aware of

what else? anyone?

I use either a wire wheel on my grinder or sanding disc on my grinder. Your drill would work just a little more work, a grinder spins faster and has more power. Also rust bullet makes a product called metal blast that is a rust converter/cleaner that I have been using on my frame after wire wheeling and before paint. on smaller parts that are all metal I soak in acid over night. you can buy it at a hardware store.

Thanks for the input.

so the steps should be

1. get to clean metal
2. treat w/ an acid/rust converter
3. Primer to seal
4. paint.

planning a full paint job in about a month (more than likely the $50) so for now im just treating the rust.

Just make sure your primer is compatible with acid etched metal.

I just did the interior of my 40 with ace rust stop. Used their red primer in a can thinned same 4:1 as the paint.
Stuck good to the Osphod metal. I sprayed it on over old paint/bare metal...let it sit a min or so then wiped off with clean rag.
Then let it dry 24hr. Then wipe down with some pre paint prep stuff I got at the auto paint shop and shot the primer/paint with a cheapo 14$ Harbor Freight HVLP.

I did my rims with the battery charger. Worked pissah. I kept the rebar around, maybe I'll derust some of my smaller parts this winter.

4.5 in angle grinder and a CRAP LOAD of flap disc sanders from Harbor freight has worked well for me.
I recently found at home depot a "rust stripper" wheel that you chuck up into a drill...This (to my amazement) worked AWESOME for stripping rust once the paint was mostly removed. Not sure how it works, but the tub pan on my 40 was not looking so how. I went to work with this gizmo, and it cleaned up NICELY! Additionally, it didnt take the metal with it unlike an angle grinder with a sander wheel on it.
