Ok - stupid question - although there isn't supposed to be such thing.

M101CDN.

Like lots of us having a lid built.

'Eventually' I'd like to mount an ARB RTT. Closed dimensions 55 x 47. Open 55 x 94.

Trailer is 74 1/4 length and 48 1/4 width.

Do the RTT mounting bars need to be no more than the 55" apart so that the RTT is mounted to open off to the side of the trailer.

Are three bars, one on each end and one for add'l support in the middle advisable? Bars no more than 47" as well?

I want to build this once and right with the necessary structural support under the lid for a RTT down the trail.

There are mounting bars (aluminum channels) that are connected to bottom of the tent first..and the instructions are pretty ambiguous.

If your coming off the side of the trailer, the bars are mounted going the 55" way, and obviously then your mounting bars would be installed in the convientional manner on the trailer lid.

I personally think I like the 3 bar setup on the lid...helps to disperse the weight a bit better...of course...I have a lot of weight to disperse....;)

So three bars no more than 55" apart if my OCD self understands - right?

Probably 50" to be safe...you need room for hardware.

I have a Dr. appt at 4:30.. ...I'll take a pic when I get back

can the brackets or channels under the tent be positioned in either direction?

Yes ..you are right..but it depends if you are opening the tent off the "rear" or off the "side"...that's what decides the orientation of the bar install..sorry..raining when I got home..pics in the a.m.

one thing I did on mine was to have an extension of the mounting rack under the center part of the opened half when unfolded so the weight of the half and bodies was not just on the hinges and ladder bracket.

Your trailer must be getting close to finish Brent

There are a few detailed photos in this link from a few years back.

I dont remember the spacing but it seems like I remember it being 14"- 16" from either edge. ( I am not near the trailer)

Also important: IIRC the space between the trailer lid and the bottom of the tent is exactly 3" - I would now make that 3.5" so I can carry two 2x4's under if I needed to.

Thinking of remaking the lid after 5 years now, by following the geometry of the tub lip angle (in reverse) and allowing another 4-6" of height inside - instead of a flat lid. And using different clamp type latches on the exterior.

Pasquale - outside the painting haven't done anything more to this point. Waiting for a call back from a local trailer place on some 10" dexter hubs with electric brakes AND parking feature. Basically plain old electric brakes, but it's got a lever to attach a cable for a parking brake. Guy that runs the place was going to be calling Dexter for technical info on the parking brake part. If it doesn't work out, I'll just go with electric brakes and loose the parking brake feature. After nearly toasting my brakes going down Montezuma grade in May, it's a necessary step. Did fine coming down 9 mile canyon a couple of weeks ago tho - 1st gear all the way this time!

Lid is next - like you, leaning toward a lid that mirrors the tube angles. With that, I may gain two things. One, get the RTT up just high enough for the ARB tent (Simpson III) 'I want' to make the skirt more useful and two, perhaps give enough inside height to put sputnik inside instead of on the roof rack. Besides - it looks better too - like it was designed with the trailer. Would love aluminum, but cost will probably be an issue there.

All takes $$$ which is tight and a :princess: that just doesn't understand one dime being spent on camping!

The brakes are absolutely a saftey issue!

Health - yes to that too! I need to relax to keep my heart healthy!

See you at SnT!!!

Found my answer - CarTopCamper had a nice 8 min video showing how the channels go on the underside of the tent. ARB has to be similar in from reviews, etc that Kurt has put up. Now to win the lottery!

Sorry for the delay...this is the ARB Simpson III on my bars...

how many screws/bolts are holding the channels to the tent itself?

Each channel gets 2 bolts going through the floor and the channel..it also gets to small ( 3/4" - 1" ) screws that go into the edge channel at the very ends...

The instructions were obviously written by an egineer...because sure as hell anyone that knew anything about proper layout, bolts, nuts or connections didn't write them...

I have a eezze awn RTT and the mounts are similar to the one on the pic above..
I installed mine right on top of the trailer roof (drilled holes on the alum lid).
I tried 4 yakima round racks but when on dirt roads it would flex (bounce) too much for my liking and was afraid it would come off.

I do however run similar brackets when it is on top of my 60....

I got two different set of brackets when I got my tent from Adventure trailers...when they used to be here in SOCAL.

Thanks guys.
