A buddy of mine that's never been to CO is coming up to stay for 4-5 days at the beginning of May. #1 priority is taking a scenic trip offroad, somewhere we can camp for a night or 2 and finish up the next day. He has a newer Z71 Sierra, 3" lift with 33's, so somewhat technical is good but he'd rather not scratch and bang up something the bank still owns. I think the main goal is scenery, but far enough way from the city crowd and off pavement. Any info at all is appreciated!

Early May is tough due to snow. Most mountain paved roads will be clear, but you'd be hard pressed to find any mountain trails open...most don't open until June or even July. One option would be renting snow mobiles and hitting some of the trails in the back country. The west slope probably has some good stuff open that early...Leon was over that direction.

@PWCO70crusier thanks for the info. I'm pretty new to CO myself and didn't realize trails would still be closed in May when we were planning dates. Then I learned that some don't even open until mid July or so.

I've been searching traildamage and found Medano Pass, it's pretty far south but their website says that it's not even fully open until mid May.

yep...we are planning on running that as the club run in mid May...so we'll see what the rest of the spring brings for snow. The best months to come out and wheel are July-late Sept/early Oct. There are a few trails that don't open up until Sept!

Not technical but good scenery and accessible May, Old Stage road to Cripple Creek then Shelf Road then on to Cannon City then Phantom Canyon Road back up to Cripple Creek. Near the bottom of the Shelf road you can run "The Bank" A little technical and good primitive camping.
You might also try Texas Creek OHV area.

Thanks Pops. I attempted Old Stage to CC in late Feb but several miles into it there was a narrow road out in the open(it was like a bridge) that had completely washed out and was closed. Can't remember what/where the road was but it was next to a couple of cabins, I couldn't find a way continue on to Cripple Creek so we headed back.

Definitely nice scenery but there were a bunch of kids in beater cars sliding around the corners, dumping fuel all over the road from a busted line, just terrorizing the place ..and some how we ended up in front or behind them when they'd break down all day ...main reason why I wanted to get far enough away from the city crowd. But we're leaving on a Friday morning so maybe it won't be as bad as the weekend.
