Stumbled onto this guy on youtube the other week. He built his own pop-up shell-style camper for his Tacoma. His idea can also be adapted to a rooftop tent. He used 80-20 extruded aluminum for the frame and some heavy-duty canvas detailed in his video that's much stronger than your standard tent material. It really interested me because of the no weld no sew aspect of it. So I figured I would share it so you guys can see if this works for you!

 
That is a cool pop up. I'd have to cut the top off my 80series to make something like this. It's possible! and I'm sure has been done.

I was thinking the same concept of construction and materials could be applied to a rooftop tent. You could do it a standard tilt up or pop up I imagine it would be cheaper than purchasing one and probably more durable with the material he used
