Hey so I need some advice. Should I pull the spark plugs before trying to start it? It sat upsidedown (like a turtle, Skillet) for a good hour. What should I do?

Yes, why take a chance, pull them and crank it for a bit, before you commit to a chop and cage, make sure you are up to what that entails, and have to equipment and time to do it, Those builds are not a simple and easy as pictures here make them out to be.
Im not gonna bitch at you for the roll, but make sure your ready for a project like a cut and cage, if not sell the truck and buy build a reasonable project

Poor cruiser!

First off, I'm glad that you and your friends are ok and none of you were hurt worse than already explained.

Secondly, give the truck some time to rest. Pull the plugs, pull the interior stuff to give you room to work, get the glass out of the way (if there is glass that's shattered, etc.). Pull the mirrors, doors, etc., that you need to remove to start your rebuild project (or cage, tube, whatever you plan on doing). Check over the engine bay, etc. This is a good time to do all of that PM work that you might have been waiting to do. Pull the shafts, check out the axles, etc. YOu need to know that the truck is mechanically and structurally (sans body) sound.

I would definitely check out Brian McGyver's thread on "Sunny Belly" that is an incredible thread--really out of this world. It would behoove you to PM or call Brian to get his input. I would also contact some of the better mechs. on this board and see what they would recommend.

Good luck and let us know how we can help you.

Best.

Thanks Beno, that is some great advice. Once I heal up I'm going to start stripping the thing. Does anyone have a link to the Sunny Belly thread? I can't find it.

The time to make mistakes is when you are young. I am glad you are ok. That is #1 #2 is get better. #3 is learn the lesson available, #4 is when people offer opinions & advice take what you can use & disregard the rest.

Finally if you decide to remove the roof I'd appreciate it if I could buy the rear hatch latch located in the upper rear door.

:D

I have drifted in a lakebed...slick slick mud is the key, and I won't be doing it ever again because I almost shat myself with fear :).

Hope your kidney heals. If not, just get a friend drunk and have em wake up in a tub of ice with a note...problem solved.

Kids do stupid stuff, try not to repeat yourself and all is well. Everyone claiming darwin should shaddup since you would be dead if darwin was enforced in this case...you beat the odds, go kill a duckling and eat it you king of the food chain! :)

ahhhh! Salt in the wound!! My lil pigpen :(

oh yeah, if you sell that 80 I will buy it from ya and buggy it :)

Welcome to the "flat road roll club" although I wasn't doing drifts...I actually got pulled in by a small "drift'....:o

s*** happens...people need to get over with it...ya live...ya learn...ya rebuild and move on hopefully a bit smarter than before

Advice-Don't take my earlier poking fun at you as "young person bashing". It certainly isn't.

You ARE young, and from the sounds of things, inexperienced. With that as an assumption, I would sell the hulk of your wreck and start over. The reason, is that unless you have lots of $$, and even more time, none of the options you have put forth are any good. To tube that, by a pro like Luke Porter will run to thousands of dollars fast and probably $4-5000 to complete. Not to mention the 6-12 months of calender time before you get it back. It will leave you with a trailer only 80 series-what good is that? If you go cheap and try to booger something together yourself, you will be left with undrivable junk.

The body work to fix it will easily cost $10,000, as much as the whole thing is worth. So unless you have gold plated insurance, or tons of your own money, this one is a goner.

My advice would be to sell or part out for what you can get, and buy a mini-truck if you want to keep 4 wheeling. They are cheap to build, cheap to buy and cheap to run. Well, cheaper than a Cruiser anyway. There will still be Land Cruisers to buy and play with once you have a real job and get yourself established.

Good luck, but in the end, I think you are done with 80 series Land Cruisers, at least for awhile.

Ouch. The truth hurts. I don't have lots of money, but I do have time. I really can't decide what to do. I think when it comes down to things you are right. This sucks.

Plus my mom just told me that because of this, the whole family might lose all coverage.

Safari Ary...
Long time cheif...
Astounding to see you defending other kids with more money than common sense...
Have a nice day, feltching man-juice from your cellmate.

Hope all is well, and sorry about your A. Mater.

Y'know, I'm probably leaving myself wide open with this, but wtf is an A. Mater.?

As for the rest of your comments, you really can go back to NAXJA, I didn't miss you at all. :flipoff2:

Plus my mom just told me that because of this, the whole family might lose all coverage.

Did you already report this to the insurance company?

If not, then you might be ok, but if you did, your mother might be right.

Live and learn my friend. You might be paying for your family's insurance coverage coming up here....

Jason, I doubt your family will lose coverage, they will probably just have to drop you from the policy and set you up on your own(read $$$). Same thing happened to my family when my lil bro was in a wreck.

As for what to do with the truck, I think it depends on who you are, where you think you're headed in life, and how resourceful you are. If you really have a desire to be a good wrench/car nut then I would say to hell with everyone else, let's get this thing fixed.

There doesn't have to be much money standing between you and a driveable/wheelable 80, but there is gonna be a TON of labor. Go around to a few of the older family owned body shops in your town and find the old guy in the back. Lose any sort of attitude 'cause you are essentially going there to beg. Seek him out and ask questions. Explain that you need to fix this rig and can't afford to have someone else do it. Ask him where he would start and how he would do the bulk of the work. If you have the right attitude and social skills, you should be able to get a damn good idea of what exactly your rig needs to be fixed and how to go about doing it.

If you don't see yourself learning how to really wrench, weld, etc and in the future plan to just have a mechanic do the bulk of your work(nothing wrong with this either), then I would sell the rig off or part it out, and move on.

If you do part it out, can I have the panel that covers the fuse box? Mine is busted.

Thanks.

The vultures start circling......

BHM-That panel is a dealer available item and it's cheap. I replaced mine because it got loose and rattled. I think it was $15 or so. You need to know what your interior color is-mine was "OAK" how ghey is that!
