I am looking for a local shop to install a SCORE approved roll cage...anybody have any recomendations?

Mark,
No work on my rig yet but Blitzkrieg Motorsports in Anaheim is our current shop of choice for work on our chase trucks some of which are full caged/coilovered setups.

Mark you're stepping it up... I like it. I have no local recommendations, but you seem to like leaving the truck (maybe they will take it to another state this time, thnx to MAF) I would not hesitate to leave it with Luke at 4x4 Labs...he does unbelievable work and can do anything, or PolyPerformance up near Pismo. If you're going to have the potential to use the cage....the most important thing IMO would be the proper installation (bends, tube, welds, etc).

My experience with Desert type shops, is that they are always exptremely late on delivery dates and they have no idea what a 4 door wagon is about and tend to get lost in it. Yes they can build a cage, but they don't know the truck, and will probably jack up the price significantly b/c they are not used to it (funny how that works).

Looks like you'll be using 2" DOM Chomoly or should I say 2" DOM C$$$$$$$$Y.

Can't wait to see the final product...
any particular reason for the cage?(going to run the Baja?) are you doing the seats and belts to compliment?

I am just researching the possibilities at this point. The Baja would be awesome but pretty far out at this point. Stopped by a local shop today and they quoted me 5000 for just the cage.

Sam, Now that I am used to "losing" my truck its all good...maybe this time I could drop it off in San Diego and they could send it to Florida for the cage! :D

As a rule Sam you are right, but thankfully not all are so unscrupulous. (spelling?)

Mark, unless you plan on running your 80 in class 3 (or class 8?) you won't need the chromo. The key is getting a cage that is welded full circumfrence at every joint with quality tubing, does not interfere with ingress and egress anymore than is neccessary, and ties into the frame at every footprint. Which I am sure you already know. The most inportant thing is to find a shop/fabricator that you trust.

Who did you see today that actually quoted 5k for a cage. Tell me it wasn't Prep By Jake!
Whatever you do note the mileage when you do give up your rig. ;)

Sandage Off Road here in San Juan...decent looking work. Have you heard of them? I wish Precision was still in San Clamente but he just closed shop recently. Mo, when they weld to the frame how do you keep the body from rattling on the cage with out ditching the rubber body isolators and welding the cab to the cage? Still undecided on which class to go for. I really want more power ...V8(500+HP) but that puts me in a class that gets really expensive to be competitive.

Have not had any experience with Sandage.

The most common way is to attach the feet of the cage to a plate and have a similar but not exact size plate bolted to the upper plate through the sheet metal and then weld a small leg to the frame. As you mentioned this does negate what the body mounts are there to do. To have a SCORE legal cage you will have to sacrifice the isolation. You are absolutely correct that it is much more expensive to be competitive in class 8 vs 3. Not sure where the 80's size will put it, probably mid or full size. Hard to group it with the 3's in physical size but you never know. I haven't heard of anyone racing one before. Would be really cool though.

Class 3 is out ... 108" max wheel base

looks like I am going for class 8

I would LOVE to run Baja in an 80 someday. drop in a big ass V8 Toyota of course, get sponsors and coil the truck over. The only issue with the 80 is the solid front axle. in those whoops at 60mph.

BAJA then DAKAR...I should just go into the off road and adventure business.

I couldn't remember the specifics but I was thinking it would be too big for class 3. I can't find my rule book to check but I don't think the plate junction as the cage passes through the sheetmetal is SCORE legal. Brain fart on my part.

The solid front axle may not be ideal but it should be fine all the Heeps have to run them in the Jeepspeed class. Just be sure to gusset the hell out of it. Especially at the knuckle ball to "axle tube" where it necks down. That would be really cool to see an 80 run in Baja.

you are right the 80 is too long for class 3. I think class 3 is 107" wheel base?? They talked about changing it to 116 last year but decided to leave it short as far as I know.

I was off by one inch...108 class 3 max wb

I will ask around tomorrow as I am meeting with our team owner and see if he knows of any other good shops to reccomend. FWIW I think a v8 swap will be mandatory if you want to be competitive in the class.

can I do a V8 and still be legal for class 8? something about the truck had to be manufacured with the used power plant?

Sounds like you should get a rule book, it is much more knowledgeable than me. You can order one here. ;)

I forgot to ask about the shop but I will ask tomorrow.:o
