Sooooo...I love the factory rock rails for the fj. I like how subtle they are. I hate the price and have no idea how strong/rugged/durable/useful they are. I definately need the protection but i dont want to fork out $210.00 per side (that's after a considerable discount) if they are just for looks and will bend when I put them to use. Anybody have any suggestions as to what I should go with? Also the dealer told me they were discontinued but they had one set left on their shelf and wouldn't be able to order anymore in the future.

Lots of people roll with the OEM sliders. I've never heard anything bad about them. With that said, it may take you a little time, but I'm sure you can score a used pair on the cheap. The cheapest out there are the trail gear sliders, though lots of people have complained about them rusting (paint fixes that problem). And from there they just go up. Demello are some really good ones. And for some reason I'm staring at the computer monitor drawing a huge blank. If I remember some more I'll come back, but I'm sure you'll see Jerry or Lee jump in here pretty soon, with more info.

Not too familiar with the OEM's performance; however, if you are looking for some that tuck in close to the body, ARB makes some that are very similar to the OEM and ARB usually makes a sturdy product. Metaltech also make some that tuck close to the body; however, they are quite expensive.

Trail Gear makes some for very cheap (u get what you pay for - though I will say mine have held up fine...I just spray paint them as the powdercoat grinds down).

Alot of people use Demello's, Metaltech's, BudBuilt's and expedition one's. There are many options to choose from.

That last link was extremely helpful. I appreciate all of your input. The trail gear seems like great bang for the buck. that is probably the set ill end up with considering Im broke and the old lady probably wouldn't care as much if I threw down 300 clams as opposed to 5 or 6. Run-on sentence.

The factory rails are are made of thin tubing (more like sheet metal) and offer no real protection, besides which they are too close to the body to be of much use off-road.

If they didn't cost so Damn much moneys.

That's my real beef with the factory ones; for what they charge for them, you can get much better aftermarket ones. Or, you can do what I did and pay twice - once for the Toyota ones and again for aftermarket. :crybaby:
