pretty easy mod, except for double nutting the studs and pulling them out of the axle housing.
i had a extra cover so i painted it and the ring ahead of time.
i also have a extra axle housing so i pulled the front set of studs from it. they are longer than the rear cover studs, so i used those.
then i applied silicone to the cover, let it sit for a couple minutes, then installed it to the housing. but the ring on and bolted it down.
i let it sit over night before filling it with 3 qts of royal purple 75/90.

after installing this and looking at it, i thought, instead of using the whole ring for one diff. why not cut it in half and use it for two. since you're only using it to protect the bottom of your diff anyway.

i have one more ring, and thats prolly what i'll do with it....

Looks good, now run a piece of thick steel along the ring gear to protect the cover :)

i like your thinking jason :grinpimp:

Curious what the rock ring does? Seems like it doesn't really protect anything. Just curious.

it's first use it to keep the lip of the cover from bending away from the housing if it's draged over rocks or whatever.
which is why i put it on in the first place.
next is you can build of it for diff protection like lc did

:D

gotcha. that makes sense. I just wasn't sure what it's practicality was.

Anybody have a source for the diff cover rock rings?

I need one for my FJ60.

Thanks,

Thanks,

check pirate 4x4 and look there, that's where i got my originals from.
i can't remember who it was.

could you have counter sink some allen head bolts? mine are pretty bet up from rock rash and its like one peaces know and the studs come off with the nut lol

Dam, i end up breaking something or draining the axles every year anyway.. i get my 90wt from Walmart ;)

Nice Mod!, i need to get a cover for mine ASAP!

Nice. And good idea on cutting it in half so it works on two diffs.

+1 on the additional plate protection. I probably had about 10-15 dents in my front diff and some of them were big enough I was concerned that the ring gear might be rubbing. That metal is thin!

I had an old bent housing so I cut the face off the bent diff housing and welded it directly the face of the one under my rig. At first I didn't think it'd be heavy duty enough but after hitting rocks with it for a few years it seems to be fine.

hey guys where could I get one of them there rock rings?
and does anyone know where I could get a new cover for the diff as well?

I was gonna put on one of those really thick pipe caps (on the front) but didn't get around to it. I remember people selling those a while back for toyotas and sammis.

I like the rock ring but you really do need to reinforce and protect that face of the diff cover. btw, why hasn't anyone come out with a triple thick cruiser diff cover like they have for 44s and 60s? All those are (I have one for my 60) is a stock cover (the front 60 is 1/8") with two more bottom halves of covers welded to it. Makes it 3/8" thick on the bottom half of the cover. Makes it pretty much worry free about bending or denting it.

Tank look at the post above yours...

I have one of those covers on mine.. (won it in a raffle) and have dragged the diff, and backed up into rocks, multiple times with no ill effects... (so far :) )

Still need to protect the front though...

so does trail gear i think
