Hey, looking for some tips on how to clean up corrosion on rims.

Do any of those auto store rim cleaning products actually work ? Muratic acid cleaner is another option I saw

Any hope in those options or is a sandblast / powder coat the only way to clean it up ?

Better yet, does it even matter , is this all cosmetic or does it make the wheel weaker over time ?

=] that was a fun video to watch, will have to hoist the entire cruiser in the air for that technique though lol

OK yeah screw it, I'll just power wash and move on. Powder coat guy quoted me like $350 , doesn't seem worth it for a set of winter rims.

There are 2 Chemical guy products I've used on the 2000 hundy rims but only on the outside that have taken the brake dust corrosion off but what I've noticed after doing that is that the paint is worn down to the point its not perfect if that makes sense.

Yeah it does , thanks for the info. Im starting to think unless I pay to have them sandblasted , re painted then its probably not worth it messing with.

For now im thinking ill just degrease / powerwash and move on.

Anyone have a go-to way of removing a tire from a rim? Think ill pull the valve and see if a few whacks of a mallet allow it to let go .. otherwise I'm gong to go with the fun method of driving my mini-mini van onto a 2x6 placed onto the sidewall tire.

I almost think cleaning the rims with those products I've used is almost like cleaning them to prep for paint except the scuffing part.

If you are able to break a bead with a mallet I'd be surprised.

I used ZEP citrus cleaner on mine when I waited a bit too long to do a brake job. I didn't even mix it very strong and it worked surprisingly well.

Do you want to remove the tire to make them easier to clean or do you want to remove the tire to paint them?

If it's for painting a deck of cards and an old sheet works great. you can stuff the cards between the wheel and the tire and they will stay through the whole painting process. The wheels shown below have 3 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear and they have held up great... granted these are on the the wifes Lexus that doesn't see many dirt roads. I did the same thing to the wheels on my 4runner but 4 coats of paint and primer (maybe a bit overkill) and after full year they still look. A couple chips from the trail but otherwise they still look great.

I wish I could find the OEM paint code for my 2000 Land Cruiser rims.

Nice trick. I ended up just paying a shop to pull them off after failing several times on my own. I needed to get them off to install the snow tires

Me too, someone had an idea recently to take a photo with a good camera / good light and then use the tool in sherman williams website , or even photoshop / google / a variety of other software to give you a color code. I saw it work pretty well for someone trying to figure out primer color of their underbody
>> although our original color is so far faded now so IDK
