I have a Rhino PTO winch, worm gear type, mounted on the 40. Tried to look around for some info and couldn't find anything. Have the driveshaft and everything, just not connected. Anyone have any info regarding setting it up and/or operation? I'm unfamiliar with PTO's

I do, as well as the drive shaft. I guess what I'm asking is how do you operate the thing once all is said and done

I have a PTO winch running off an NP205. Basically you need to shaft from the PTO box to the winch, and a cable to engage the PTO. I have a simple push / pull mounted on the tranny shifter for the PTO box. Fyi, it is very difficult to match speed with the winch pull, so I usually put the transfer case in nuetral. It pulls hard, got myself and others out of some nasty stuff several times. Oh yeah, make sure to get some spare shear pins.

A PTO winch is fairly easy to operate... it has a engage lever, on the transfercase (that comes thru the floor ,to the left of the shifter) and another (usually) at the winch. once both are "on" put the transfercase in neutral, and start the engine, 1st gear will give you the strongest pull, but it will work with all gears. to spool out you can simply disengage the lever by the winch and pull cable... or you can just use reverse.
As 70CRZR said... if you dont ease out on the clutch the shear pin will fail...and they DO fail...

have fun...

The lever or knob will depend on PTO you have. OEM PtO will ahve a lever on the transmission cover. Other normally have a cable with a knob on or under the dash. Post a picture of your PTO unit. I have a couple of Ramsey winchs and a few more OEM winchs. The OEM have a shear pin the Ramsey doesn't. Chances are you won't with a Rhino.

Here is a picture of one of my Ramsey winchs. You will see a lever on the passenger's side to engage the spool. Your I believe should have something like it. You free wheel the spool to pull the cable out and lock it to winch the cable back in. You can winch the cable in and out going from a forward gear to reverse. When not in use the spool should be locked.

First of all, nice looking rig! But when you say PTO unit?

I think mine does have something like that just without the lever. There is something sticking out of the back on the passenger side though, ill se if I can turn it with the vice grips tomorrow.

Thank for all the input guys. I'll let you know how it goes once I get everything hooked up.

My 67 fj40 that came out of Colorado had a Rhino PTO winch. really never used it but it did work. I had the short stalk with knob on the left side of the tran hump. The winch itself had the handle on it to be able to manipulate it. I'm certain it was a dealer option in CO.
