I apologize if this is used up subject, but here goes; if one can purchase a RHD jeep for use as a rural mail carrier, why couldn,t one use(import) an rhd cruiser for the same purpose? Since a federal agency uses these vehicles, wouldn't one expect that the actual use of rhd vehicles is fine.. so what is the actual sticking point when it comes to importation of rhd rigs.
cheers

the jeep is built for the market. The import regardless of the steering wheel is not built for the market. So they do not know about it.

The years for importing(25 yrs) is to protect the auto manufactures, has little to do with safety. But does allow vintage import buyers to get a cool older vehicle. Dependant on where you live you can register an import rhd model. As long as it meets the criteria for importing, like 25 yrs old etc.

See the FAQ for importing to see if this has been talked about prior.

Ya thanks, figured there would be a connection between govt and auto ind. I have heard that the importation of rhd minis from the UK is next to impossible, even if they are 25+, am I mis informed? Does the 25+ rule trump other importation criteria?

IIRC, the gov'ment will accept RHD vehicles as long as the particular model is on the list. The land cruiser is on the approved importation list up until the 80's I believe. It's been awhile since I've visited the NHTSA site, so I may not be 100% correct. here is a code for each vehicle that registered importers have to use when the paperwork is being completed. Always wanted to try importing a unique vehicle, but there are quite a few on here who have. Here's a good place to start with a link to the list of approved vehicles.

Thanks, one would figure it would be a "list" that would be the deciding factor. I have imported a BJ from BC, with little to no problems. It was ~1K added expense to the overall, but IMO worth it, just not rhd.
