I could not believe my eyes! A reusable air filter on the car.
Has anyone tried to follow the instructions and reuse the air filter? I didn't, I put a new "throw-away" filter, but kept this one just in case.

Is it safe to reuse it?

The one in the picture has not been washed yet, obviously

And no need to blow it dry, as long as you don't let it sit and rust. It can be moist when you put it in, it will dry up after a mile or two.
This is the standard filter on 1HZ and 1HD, 80s and 100s, at least.
My 2 filters have 450 k km between them - still good.

Yup this is a thing. Follow the instructions on the filter and don't forget to blow it dry (from the inside-out).

Thank you

Is this a desert thing, where filter can get get full of sand quickly (and unexpectedly)?

I never had a car with reusable air filter. K&N and likes do not count, they have oil there too.

Wow, this is impressive!

Thank you!

Yes, it's meant for extreme conditions. After my desert trips, I've removed handfuls of sand from the filter with compressed air. For us, filters don't last as long so this is a good way around having to replace them so often.

EDIT: There are two types of filters of this shape and the one with a metal cage around the element is not washable!

But if you look at the pictures in my opening post, the filter does have a metal cage and the sticker DOES say to imerse it in water fully no less than 10 times! This is a proper washing to me...once again, I am asking all this because I have zero experience with reusable filters, washable or not.

Btw, there is a thread in here where someone converted a UZJ with a HDJ filter and box. The box for that reusable filter also has a cup with a valve hanging under it, where all heavier particles end up as they are centrifuged from the airstream.

You are correct and your filter is the washable type. By metal cage around the filter, I meant around the outside of the element like a garden fence.

Oh, I see now.

Thank you for clarification!

and by the way, since we are on the topic of reusable filters here, I also changed my fuel (diesel) filter at the same time. It seemed in good shape, but I prefer to change things on a 18 old car. The fuel filter was NOT reusable, correct?
