According to the manuals I've been looking over (http://ncttora.com/fsm/2000/index.html) I need some kind of special too to remove the crank shaft pulley so that I can replace the timing belt.

Anyone have any suggestions on what alternatives I might be able to use, or were I might be able to rent/barrow one of these tools?

Thanks,

remove the crank bolt then try to use two pry bars, one on each side and wiggle the pulley side to side. if it dosn't move go to your parts store and see if you can rent or buy a crank pulley puller

The hard part is removing the crank bolt. It just turns the entire engine..

brace your breaker bar against the frame and bump the starter.
Most of them just kinda wiggle off, no puller needed.
Some of them do still require a puller, though.

X2

My 3.4 didn't need the puller though... I'd spray some penetrating oil on the crank bolt and between the pulley and engine too.

I made a pully holder similar to the ones for sale, Made it out of some stock square tubing I had and a few grade 8 bolts.

I can take a few photos. if needed. nothing special.
Probably not worth shipping to Texas. But I did need this to get the bolt off. Im not crazy about hitting anything with an impact that is torqued to over 200 ft pounds.

Plus you need something to hold the pully to get the bolt back on to the aforementioned 216 I think ft pounds.

X2 on that, when putting it back on use a small block of wood and a big ratchet strap, then you can torque it down and have a:beer:
