I know tow straps with hooks are bad and I have a long good tow strap. But I also have a shorter strap that has the hooks, can/should I cut the hooks off? then I use the loops with shackles if need for easy pulls. Thanks Jay in NY

keep the hooks on the shorter strap.
use it as a tree saver just in case.

yes, cut the hooks, you can always use a shackle for a tree saver use

you may be able to use a shackle without cutting the hooks off, if there is space, but then you have twice the projectile mass...

generally speaking, any strap with hooks on it isn't a stretch-type strap....meaning it's designed to drag your buddies Yugo down the street, not for any "real" recovery type work.

I've also never seen a strap with hooks rated for over 10k#....way too light for any offroad-type use.

I have a tow strap with hooks, rated at 60000lbs. It stretches 30% and is 50 feet long. It is the best "tug'm" strap I have ever used. It have seen an 80000lbs unit with hooks, break this spring. It was on a large 4 wheel drive tractor pulling out a very stuck air seeder. The rope didn't fall to the ground, but it was gentle and it didn't sling shot anywhere.

I have always been a little wary of the hooks, but with safety latches, and a healthy rating on them, how are they more dangerous then a clevis???

Here's a pic before the safety latches where installed:
