Removing Axle from Birf (1 Viewer)

So the brass drift, hammer appraoch didn't work. Read in the Tech articles about using a pipe and slamming it on the ground.

Any specific tips on the Pipe method? Sure seems like that would damge the birf slamming it on the pipe.

What is the best type of pipe to use?

2" pipe should be just large enough to allow the axle room to slide in. You drop it with axle shaft side down and it will snap a retaining ring behind the star in the middle of the birf. It doesn't take a much force as you'd think.

I've separated a birf/axle a couple of times - first time was like wtf, 2nd time was whatever.

So if I understand, i'm not slamming the axle/birf on the end of the pipe? The birf/axle is resting on the end of the pipe and I raise and drop the pipe....right?

Nope, you are dropping the birf/axle assembly with the axle side down. If you have a bench vice, bolt a short section of the pipe into the vice and put a block of wood below it to cushion the fall of the axle.

i never did get mine seperated.i am going to bring it out when chris has a maintance get together.if your axle is not grooved to bad you dont have to seperate it to get old grease out and put new in.chris are you a daddy yet?

We are in the holding pattern - one week from Monday is the ETA, but who knows at this point.

short side is a bit harder, but long side should just pop off. you leave pipe on the ground (i put a shop rag underneath to cushion axle), hold birf up to the point where the axle's almost ready to come out of the pipe, then slam down.

does it matter if pipe is longer than axle?

you need it to be longer so the axle can fall...at least a couple of inches.

If you can't come up with a longer pipe, clamp the pipe in a vice. This will work as long as the there is a little room between the floor and the bottom of the axle when you set the axle in the pipe.

Picked me up a 3' piece of pipe today.

And in fact it is the short end I'm dealing with first. Hope to give it a go tomorrow night.

Just make sure your toes are not in the falling area! I've only had one birf that wouldn't come apart.. Twisted splines but every other has come apart. And I've done quite a few over the years..

I scared off a few trick or treators...but i got er done. Thanks for the tip. A red rag stuffed in the end of the pipe saved the toes.
