Does anyone have pictures of how to remove the flywheel inspection cover so I can highlight the timing marks with some white paint? I am having a hard time passing smog because the techs can't figure out how to check the timing. I have printed up pictures to show them the window above the starter but I would like to paint the BB and line on the flywheel and the arrow mark in the inspection window so that they can be seen better. I have read this is possible by removing the flywheel inspection cover on the bottom but I could not find it yesterday. Any pictures of description of how to do this would be helpful.

Small plate at the bottom of bell housing of the trans. 2 screws.

That's what I thought. So if I remove that I should be able to rotate the flywheel, with truck in neutral, and find the BB and line for the timing marks?

Don't paint a line on the TDC 0° scribe on the flywheel. It will only confuse the tech. The 7° BTDC timing ball doesn't need paint. It's easy to see with a decent strobe since it's indented

So it won't help to paint the markings on the flywheel? Should I just paint the arrow marker in the timing inspection window?

The inspection plate on the FJ60 (manual transmission) is fairly large--it covers about the bottom 1/2 of the bell housing. I think it is used for inspecting clutch components as well as the flywheel ring gear etc. The picture above is for the FJ62 I guess and it looks small and may only be there to inspect the ring gear. You need to be able to see the part of the fly wheel that is facing towards the front of the truck.

So is there a way to do this on the FJ62? I want to make things as easy as possible for the smog tech.

They need to adjust timing or just check to see what it’s set at?

If the truck passes visual for smog components and gets a clean score on the dyno run does it really matter where the timing is set?

For some reason they have to check to see what it is set at.
