Couldn't agree more regarding REI and their offroading position.

Bought my wife a pair of Merril sandals and some slippers. Bought myself a pair of Sorel slippers and a new North Face vest. Poof...at REI prices the certificate was history.

you must not agrre too much if you are shopping there.

Get a clue. You are sponsering folks that fight our hobby.

I try not to spend any moeny at REI. They are a proud sponsor of the Sierra Club, who works diligently to close 4x4 trails throughout the US.:frown::mad:

This must be falling on deaf ears. None here seems to care?

My local site has a strong anti REI and Cabbelas following.

These guys plug money all over to help close land to motorized use.

Way to go all you supporters.:bang:

Get a f'ng clue yourself - I was GIVEN a gift card to the place (see Post #1 before slinging crap dude). Not my choice, but I'm not going to just throw it away either.

If it's a gift certificate, the money's already been spent. Better to use it rather than have all that money spent on the Sierra Club.

However, watch what you buy carefully. A large percentage of outdoor brands give money to wilderness groups as well. These include: The North Face, Cascade Designs (MSR, Platypus, Sea To Summit, ect), Outdoor Research, Mountain Hardwear, Black Diamond, and Patagonia. Those are just the ones I've looked into. Backcountry.com is also a huge supporter of wilderness groups and has stated that they support the Red Rock Wilderness act which is trying to close virtually all red rock areas in utah.

Research or ask before you buy!

Interesting - almost seems counterproductive. Companies that want you to buy their product that's designed for outdoor use and activity and yet fund efforts to shut those same outdoor areas down!

Actually, roadless areas are where their products are used. Me, I'm a fan of wilderness--there isn't much of it left. I'd have no use for my truck if people were allowed to destroy what's left of wild lands--I'd have no place to drive to that I couldn't drive in my car.

A couple things wrong with this:
-Have you been anywhere in the western united states???? There is so much open space its incredible. Wilderness is not dying out. It will be here for a long long time, whether people care to protect it or not.
-People aren't allowed to destroy any kind of land, and left to their own devices, I don't think they would choose to anyway. Allowing the people to be stewards of the land rather than being shut off to government control is not a smart way to manage, nor is it fair or ethical either.

I spend money at REI, I also support Tread Lightly, TLCA, local clubs etc so I think I balance my money vote toward my own usage. More importantly I write and vote.

Oh, and I would buy some pants. These are my favorite...

So why do folks drive 40 miles to the woods to have campfires they won't extinguish while they drink beer from cans and bottles they won't haul out and create paths on unstable slopes so that the soil will erode?

Oh, because it's in my backyard, not theirs... There are places that I used to hike and train that are now so beat-down and trashed out (including unburied dead animals) that I just won't go there anymore.

MSR XGK EX multi-fuel camping stove (or 2 - so that you can cook MEALS at a time).

"The stove of choice for expeditions throughout the world, XGK EX burns any liquid fuel from white gas to kerosene to jet fuel."

Compact, safe, easy to use and effective.

After that ... Climbing gear.
