Hi all,

Just got LC80 rims for my 4runner and want to spruce them up.
What do I use? Send blasting? Send paper?
Please, let me know if you can.
Photos attached
Thank you,

IL

Maybe try a search in "Paint and Body"? What kind of coating is on the wheel to the right?

Danny

Its some kind of primer and I need to get it off.
Personally, I prefer natural look but I open for other options like painting them in other colors ... I just need to see how it would look. Any cool photos?
Thank you Danny.

Refinishing LC80 Wheels

We have had great luck powder coating wheels.

Basically the wheels are media blasted, coated with your choice of color, and then oven baked. The finish comes out close to OEM quality and lasts longer than paint.

We have powder coated these wheels in Bright Silver (looks like aluminum), Anthracite (dark grey like TRD color), and in Black. I have also come across other people who have powder coated their wheels in white, bright green, and blue with success.

Prices come out different depending on what shop you choose. Just get some feedback from previous customers about who does better quality work in your area. Some powder coaters rush jobs with mixed results.

Good luck on your wheel coating!

Thanx for writing,

What is the difference between sandblasting and media blasting? What would be the most appropriate for my situation?
Honestly, I love the natural look but I am opened for the coating if I have to.

And the last, how much should I expect to pay for the job?

Thank you again,

IL

For a "natural look", just have your rims bead blasted. It will have a textured, not polished finish. Most economical too!

By "natural look" do you mean just like OEM new, or bare natural aluminum? Bare aluminum looks good, but is a pain to clean and will rather quickly change appearance due to oxidation, dirt stains, brake dust, etc. The clearcoat finish of OEM new will be a hell of a lot better to take care of over the years.

Good luck, I'm sure you're looking forward to getting the wheels on your rig. I'm in the process of wheel shopping myself right now.

Thank you again guys,

What do you think I should expect paying for sandblasting + powdercoating per wheel?

rims are back!

Guys,
just got my LC80 rims back from sandblasting + powercoating and they look amazing! (check out the photo)

Question: should I get regular 4runner size tires 265/75/16 or install original Land cruiser size 275/70/16? ( there is no lift on my truck)

Please, let me know if you can.

Thank you,

IL

If you have narrowed it down to only those two sizes, go with the 265/75R16. The factory LC tires are a b@st@rd size. Your wheels look good BTW. What did it cost you total?

Sweet! Looks good. Glad you are happy with them

Danny

That sounds about right. I had my '06 Tundra rims chemical dipped and bead blasted for $100, then powder coated for another $180 if I recall correctly. It would have only been $30 to do each wheel if it wasn't a "custom" color.

Just remember to keep that nasty brake dust off your wheels.

I have seen many people run up to a 285/75/16 on the factory wheels with no lift. You may want to check some of the forum posts on tires to get feedback. Sometimes the size of a tire will vary dependent on the manufacturer based on the casing, tread style, and other features. This is even if the written size on the tire is the same. Many forum users will post feedback on performance, and actual measured sizes. Always best to read reviews first and make a decision later.
