Any helpful tips for refinishing a previously stained but weathered fiberglass front door?

I bought some Minxaw Gelstain from Sherwin Williams and will be going to a darker color.

Ya get a nice steel door.

Did a fiberglass door install once & made the mistake of agreeing to paint it. What a fricken nightmare. The paint was drying faster than I could get it on, so it just kept peeling off.

One week after the install homeowner calls up cause the paint was peeling off due to her rubbing things against it as she walked in & out. Needless to say it was a mother to peel the paint off. Left it the brown color it was.

Don't get me wrong they're great doors.

Good luck with it. I suppose you could hit it with some 100 grit sand paper to give it some more surface area. Only prob is will it lay flat when you apply the stain to it. I'd try it out on the jamb edge just below the bottom hinge.

Let us know how it turns out.

I may end up doing that. I will sand it, and try a couple of spots to see how it looks. I'll post some pics here before and after for grins.

Take the door off lay it down on some horses, Try polyshades by minwax stain and poly mix, Spray the stain on give it multiple coats,By spraying you are able control the color better, the results are outstanding. but take your time let each coat dry.
