bought it, its still sitting on my shelf waiting for my piranha battery trays to come in.
I am also doing a third battery in my 77.

Another good one is Vanner Voltmaster. Thats what I'm running now and it's been working great to charge my third battery.

The 1220 does not come with the solar input, whereas the 1240 does.

There is a new model, 1225, that does come with the solar input. Essentially the 1225 is a derated 1240.

When I rang Redarc to talk about my options, they are always really helpful on the phone, the guy said they derated the 1240 as the battery bank needs to be big enough to handle the 40A charge rate of this unit.

Some batteries/battery banks will handle it, others won't. Hence they provided the derated unit to suit pretty much all installations/batteries. He said there will be a specification on the battery that will tell you the maximum charge rate, or on the manufacturers spec sheet. I think a rule of thumb is 20% of the Amp Hour rating, but can't recall exactly.

Like all the Redarc products, there doesn't seem to be any bad feedback about them, they work well as expected and are a good, though expensive, option to ensure your aux batteries are properly charged. Their gear is well regarded and reliable here in Aus.

You can buy direct from their website. I've not seen any 1225 come up on ebay yet.

I've got a 24v Landcruiser, and normally have my aux battery connected to and therefore charged by the low 12v battery. I have a Redarc Charge Equaliser 20A unit to balance the batteries. When the Aux battery is low, after a night running a fridge for example, the charge equaliser struggles to keep up with the demand of both charging the aux battery, and running the fridges during the day.

A 1220, 1225, or 1240 running off the 24v system and powering all these things as well as charging the aux battery makes a lot of sense. And with the ability to simply plug in a solar panel in the future with the 1225 and 1240 is an added bonus.

Hope that's useful.

Thank you Tim-HJ61. That was a great write up. My only comment is; Where did you put the third battery? I think I have room just beside then driver's side (left if sitting in the vehicle) for a group 31 battery. I would like tookeep it in the engine bay. Anyone got any pics on third battery installations?

It's temp mounted when I need it in the cargo area. Ive got a full engine bay already with the intercooler pipes, large air compressor etc etc.,
